PARIS DOOM TRIO DELIVERS A SUFFOCATING WALL OF SLUDGE, HEAVY PSYCH AND GLOOMY SHOEGAZE
When a French doom trio places a song titled "Blood Incantation" right at the top of their tracklist, you have to chuckle at the nod to cosmic death metal. But Paris‑based trio Margarita aren't here to play trivia games. Dropping October 9th via Italy's Electric Valley Records, their debut LP Abysses of Melancholia is a nearly 40‑minute wall of suffocating sludge, heavy psych, and gloomy shoegaze. Formed in 2022 by Karen Verdier‑Désérable and the two Julies (Julie Appéré and Julie Picard), the band built their initial rep on raw, Sabbathian fuzz. For this first full‑length, they've expanded their arsenal by weaving in subtle synth layers and electronic percussion pads. Adding electronics to sludge can easily turn into a messy gimmick, but here it actually amplifies the bleakness, giving the crushing guitar riffs a colder, more cavernous space to reverberate in.

Mais le trio parisien Margarita n'est pas là pour jouer aux devinettes. Sorti le 9 octobre via le label italien Electric Valley Records, leur premier album Abysses of Melancholia est un mur de près de 40 minutes de sludge suffocant, de heavy psych et de shoegaze lugubre. Formé en 2022 par Karen Verdier‑Désérable et les deux Julie (Julie Appéré et Julie Picard), le groupe a bâti sa réputation initiale sur un fuzz brut à la Sabbath. Pour ce premier album, elles ont élargi leur arsenal en tissant des couches de synthé subtiles et des pads de percussion électroniques. Ajouter de l'électronique au sludge peut facilement devenir un gadget brouillon, mais ici cela amplifie réellement la noirceur, donnant aux riffs de guitare écrasants un espace plus froid et plus caverneux pour résonner.
Lyrically and emotionally, tracks like "Not a Mother" and "Abyssal Pain" hit with zero compromise. The music tackles grief, fractured identity, and a blunt rejection of toxic societal roles, balancing sheer physical distortion with genuinely vulnerable, ethereal vocal passages. "Swamp Lullaby" lives up to its name, crawling through thick, murky fuzz before drowning in its own feedback. It's an intensely atmospheric record that relies on patience, massive tone, and raw mood rather than flashy speed. If you dig the heavy, grief‑soaked weight of bands like Thou, Windhand, or King Woman wrapped in layers of shoegaze reverb, Abysses of Melancholia is a dark, heavy‑hitting debut that gets under your skin real quick.
Lyriquement et émotionnellement, des morceaux comme « Not a Mother » et « Abyssal Pain » frappent sans aucun compromis. La musique aborde le deuil, l'identité fracturée et un rejet frontal des rôles sociétaux toxiques, équilibrant une distorsion physique pure avec des passages vocaux éthérés et véritablement vulnérables. « Swamp Lullaby » porte bien son nom, rampant à travers un fuzz épais et trouble avant de se noyer dans son propre feedback. C'est un album intensément atmosphérique qui repose sur la patience, un ton massif et une humeur brute plutôt que sur une vitesse tape‑à‑l'œil. Si vous aimez le poids lourd et imprégné de chagrin de groupes comme Thou, Windhand ou King Woman enveloppé de couches de réverbe shoegaze, Abysses of Melancholia est un premier album sombre et percutant qui vous pénètre très vite sous la peau.
