Review / Preview: Murskaus - "Murskaus" (Self‑Titled EP)
FINNISH SOLO PROJECT DELIVERS A COLD, HEAVY AND DELIGHTFULLY BLEAK FIRST IMPRESSION
Whenever a promo sheet claims a new solo project bridges the gap between the earth‑shattering sludge of Conan, the groove‑thrash of Pantera, and the gothic gloom of Type O Negative, it's best to proceed with a heavy dose of skepticism. Those three bands share almost zero DNA. But for Markus Vähäaho, the sole mastermind behind Ylöjärvi's Murskaus, that wild constellation of influences isn't a blueprint to copy; it's a license to construct a sprawling, half‑hour slab of doom‑laden Finnish heavy metal. Slated for release on November 13th, 2026 as a completely independent DIY effort, this self‑titled EP serves as an advance look at a project built from the ground up by a single musician handling vocals, guitars, bass, and songcraft.
Murskaus (Teaser / Video)
Thankfully, Vähäaho avoids the classic trap of solo bedroom‑metal releases: sterile, programmed drums and hyper‑quantized guitar tracks that strip all the human mud out of the mix. Helped by Oskari Hakala‑Rahko on mixing duties, Murskaus maintains a thick, wooden resonance. The low‑end chugs carrying advance tracks like "Tuomion Kellot" and "Varjoissa Kuolleet Elävät" lean heavily into classic Nordic doom melancholia, punctuated by bleak, heart‑wrenching melodic guitar lines that give the suffocating weight some breathing room. The vocal delivery stays raw and unpolished, opting for a guttural, menacing growl rather than over‑processed multi‑tracking. It's dark, slow‑burning metal that relies on patience and repetition, allowing the riffs to slowly pulverize rather than chasing flashy technical solos.
Where the EP stumbles slightly is in its ambition: clocking in at over 30 minutes across a short tracklist, a few of the mid‑tempo arrangements drag out their repetitive riffs just a minute longer than necessary. But as an early warning shot from the deep Finnish woods, and a stepping stone toward a full‑length album in 2027 and an eventual full‑band live lineup, Murskaus offers a cold, heavy, and delightfully bleak first impression.
