TWENTY YEARS IN, ITALIAN ROCKERS DELIVER A DARK, ATMOSPHERIC FOUR‑TRACK EP
Italian rock veterans Nagual have quietly been doing their thing out of Piacenza for two decades now. Coming off their 2024 full‑length and a fresh retrospective documentary commemorating their 20th anniversary (20 Unfashionable Years), they're back with a short, moody four‑track EP titled How We Kept The Night Away, launched via Volcano Records alongside a new lyric video for the opening track, "Gilgamesh." Nagual's DNA has historically been rooted in classic 70s hard rock and 90s grunge: think Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Sabbath. But on this new 20‑minute release, they lean heavily into a darker, more atmospheric space. Opening cut "Gilgamesh" takes inspiration from the ancient Mesopotamian epic, dealing with mortality and human limits over a driving, melancholic rock backdrop.

Après leur album de 2024 et un nouveau documentaire rétrospectif commémorant leur 20e anniversaire (20 Unfashionable Years), ils reviennent avec un EP court et atmosphérique de quatre titres intitulé How We Kept The Night Away, lancé via Volcano Records accompagné d'un nouveau lyric video pour le morceau d'ouverture, « Gilgamesh ». The cool thing here is how the band blends these different influences without letting the tracks turn into a disjointed jam. On a track like "Hollow," for instance, the heavy grunge weight steps back to let post‑punk and 80s darkwave guitars take over, echoing shades of early U2, The Cure, or The Sisters of Mercy. Instead of feeling like a quick stopgap between albums, these four tracks actually hang together around a pretty heavy, personal theme of endurance and loss. It's much more about mood and patience than heavy aggression or speed, and Alberto Callegari's co‑production at Elfo Studio gives the whole thing a warm, organic feel that lets the instruments breathe under those gloomy guitar textures. Twenty years in, Nagual are still content staying out of mainstream trends, and this EP proves they've still got plenty of dark, sincere rock ideas to share.
Ce qui est cool ici, c'est la façon dont le groupe mélange ces différentes influences sans laisser les morceaux se transformer en jam décousu. Sur un morceau comme « Hollow », par exemple, le poids grunge lourd recule pour laisser les guitares post‑punk et darkwave des années 80 prendre le relais, faisant écho à des nuances de premiers U2, The Cure ou The Sisters of Mercy. Au lieu de ressembler à une rapide transition entre deux albums, ces quatre titres s'accordent autour d'un thème assez lourd et personnel d'endurance et de perte. Vingt ans après, Nagual se contentent toujours de rester en dehors des tendances grand public, et cet EP prouve qu'ils ont encore plein d'idées rock sombres et sincères à partager.
