Single Spotlight / Review: Ten Eighty Trees - "Always On"
NEWCASTLE TRIO TURNS MENTAL EXHAUSTION INTO A HEAVY‑HITTING CATHARSIS
Newcastle's Ten Eighty Trees are one of those relentless UK underground trios that seem to practically live in the back of a tour van. Coming hot off their summer EP Bittersweet Coming of Age, they're back with a fresh single called "Always On." If you've ever caught them live, decked out in their signature colorful dungarees, you know low energy simply isn't in their vocabulary. Frontman Nathan Newton penned the track during a stretch of total mental exhaustion, feeling trapped in an endless fight‑or‑flight loop. Musically, the track locks into a thick, desert‑rock groove straight out of the QOTSA playbook, then snaps into the kind of huge, soaring chorus you'd expect from Nothing But Thieves.

What makes the song connect so well is the blunt irony behind it: as an independent alt‑rock band, you're pretty much forced to stay permanently online and "always connected" just to keep your head above water, even when that exact noise is driving you insane. Instead of turning into a self‑pitying ballad, Newton turns that frustration into a heavy‑hitting catharsis that lets the rhythm section really stomp. It's tight, relentless, and made to be played loud. If you're anywhere near York, Leeds, or Newcastle over the coming weeks, go check them out on stage: this is a trio that definitely knows how to deliver in a small, packed room.
