Flashback Spotlight / Review: UNDER THE SHADOWS - "Black Butterfly"
INTERNATIONAL GOTHIC/DOOM STUDIO PROJECT DELIVERS A LEAN, FOCUSED AND THEATRICAL TRACK
Founded by Greek guitarist and composer Elias Negrin (known for his work with Julian's Lullaby, Disharmony, and Decadence), Under The Shadows is an international studio project exploring the dark, theatrical intersections of gothic, doom, and traditional heavy metal. Originally released as the opening track of their debut EP I Before You in January 2024, "Black Butterfly" builds its atmosphere on a heavy mid‑tempo foundation. Rather than relying on wall‑of‑sound orchestration, the four‑minute track leaves clear space between Elias Negrin’s melancholic rhythm riffs and the lead work.

Vocalist Eric Castiglia gives the song its dramatic weight, switching smoothly from restrained verses to a higher, more impassioned refrain. Guest guitarist Dimitris Koskinas cuts through the dense rhythm section with sharp, soaring solos that provide a bright melodic counterweight to Anna Spanogiorgou’s somber lyrics. With the project having recently released its first full‑length album, Thesmophoria, through Lion Music, "Black Butterfly" stands out as a lean, focused entry point into Negrin’s gothic metal catalogue.
