As we approach the one-year anniversary of its release, let's go back to April 2024, when French symphonic progressive metal maestros Symakya released their critically praised album, Project 11, under the label Wormholedeath Records. A year later, the impact of this cosmic masterpiece is still felt across the metal cosmos. Relive the excitement with this amazing video:
Symakya's members reflected on the band's joining with Wormholedeath with a sense of ambition: "That contract was a turning point—it catapulted us into uncharted creative realms." True to their commitment, Project 11 served as a monument to their progress.
Symakya, founded in 2008 by Matthieu Morand (guitars/keys), Kevin Kazek (vocals), and Thomas Das Neves (drums), combined prog, melody, and sheer force to create a distinct sound. With talented bassist Julien Kuhn rounding out the roster, the band's credentials are undeniable:
- Matthieu (Elvaron) has collaborated with legends such as Iron Maiden and released five albums since 1997.
- Kevin (Seyminhol) combines his dramatic vocals with five albums and collaborations with Lord Siggi and Annihilator's Alexander Landenburg.
- Thomas (Deficiency, Heavenly) showcases thundering rhythms mastered on worldwide festival stages.
- Julien (Diamond Dust, Surtr) controls the pandemonium with his fretless bass.
The album's examination of ancient astronaut hypotheses, biblical narratives, and Greco-Roman mythology is just as compelling today as it was when it was first released. Tracks like Horses of Apollo and Eleven examine humanity's quest for truth through the lens of philosophical and ufological mystery.
Musically, Project 11 combined NWOBHM grit, 1990s power metal majesty, and symphonic prog intricacy. Fans of Iron Maiden, Tool, and Kamelot found consolation in the labyrinthine compositions, which were enhanced by Mika Jussila's flawless mastering at Finnvox Studios.
After their stunning 2011 debut, Majestic 12: Open Files, Symakya's 13-year break further heightened expectations for Project 11. A year after its debut, tunes such as the eerie Sea of Silence and anthemic The Oath continue to dominate playlists, confirming that the wait was worthwhile.
