Cosmic Jaguar’s "El Era del Jaguar": A Thrash Odyssey from Ukraine with Aztec Fire!

Who would’ve thought a bunch of Ukrainians rocking Hispanic pseudonyms would drop one of 2024’s most electrifying metal surprises? Cosmic Jaguar’s El Era del Jaguar (out May 29 via France’s Soman Records) is a riff-loaded, bass-thumping love letter to ’90s tech-thrash—think Atheist meets Cynic, doused in Aztec mystique. These guys aren’t just playing metal; they’re resurrecting ancient spirits with strings and screams.

Frontman Sergio Lunático’s sandpaper growl? Pure nostalgia fuel. Juan Maestro’s lead guitars? The caviar of shred. And Alejo Bárbaro’s drumming? Let’s just say his kit’s begging for mercy. Tracks like God of Sun and War kick off with basslines so gnarly they’d make Pestilence blush, while The Shorn Ones packs gang vocals sharper than an obsidian blade. Sure, guest singer Chimalma’s cameo on Ashes in Eyes feels like a feather in a hurricane—nice, but why? The real magic lies in the chaos: Tommy Talamanca (Sadist) and ex-Morgoth growler Marc Grewe join the carnage, turning Track 5 into a six-string circus.

Recorded in Zaporizhzhia’s Nuts4all Studio (yes, that’s a real place), this album’s a time machine. It’s technical, sure, but never soulless. The Aztec motifs? Not just window dressing—they’re baked into every riff and rhythm. Cortés is spinning in his grave, folks.

Look, I didn’t bet a hryvnia on this band either. But El Era del Jaguar slaps harder than a jaguar’s paw. It’s raw, retro, and ridiculously fun—a rare gem that balances shred and soul. Crank Solar Logos loud enough, and you’ll swear the pyramids are nodding along.
