Grin’s Acid Gods: A Molten Masterpiece That’ll Melt Your Face (But in a Good Way)

Ever felt like your eardrums needed a good pummeling? Germany’s sludge-doom duo Grin is here to oblige. Their third single, Unshut, teases Acid Gods—their upcoming album dropping May 30 via The Lasting Dose Records—and goddamn, it’s raw. Jan and Sabine Oberg, the siblings behind this fuzz-soaked chaos, have stripped their sound to the bone: just bass, drums, and vocals. Less is more? Tell that to your trembling speakers.

Picking up where 2024’s Hush left off, Acid Gods dives headfirst into lo-fi sludge, channeling the unholy spirit of The Melvins and Eyehategod. Tracks like Beneath the Altar and Unshut hit like a sonic sledgehammer—thick grooves, vocals that swing from haunted whispers to guttural roars, and basslines so heavy they’ll leave tread marks. Jan’s drumming? A primal heartbeat. Sabine’s riffs? Molten lava.

Grin’s genius lies in tension. Wild Eyes builds dread with minimalist precision, while Heavy Dew drowns you in a tidal wave of reverb. Recorded at Berlin’s Hidden Planet Studio and self-produced by Jan, the album feels both raw and meticulously crafted. The artwork—a trippy collage by Dawid M. Piprek and Caspar Orfgen—mirrors the music’s hypnotic brutality.

Since 2018’s Revenant, Grin’s evolution has been relentless. Translucent Blades (2020), Phantom Knocks (2022), Hush (2024)—each record upped the ante. But Acid Gods? It’s their magnum opus. Louder, darker, more. Can they get heavier? Always.

If you’re still sleeping on them, Acid Gods will jolt you awake. Crank it loud, let the fuzz consume you, and pray your neighbors survive.
