BlackLight Prove Prog Metal & Ballet Belong Together, and It’s Glorious

Poland’s BlackLight have done it again. Not content with just writing complex, emotional prog-metal, they’ve gone and fused it with ballet. And no, that’s not a typo. Their new live video, filmed at the Ludomir Różycki General Ballet School in Bytom, features a ballerina dancing through the atmospheric storm of “Future Belongs To” and “Ghost” like a specter in a cathedral of sound. It’s eerie. It’s beautiful. It’s… actually genius.

The performance, part of a graduation show for 9th-grade dancers, saw over 500 students and guests utterly transfixed. And honestly? So are we. Watching a dancer move with such grace and fragility while the band unleashes waves of heavy, cinematic riffs and soaring keys is the kind of artistic collision most bands only dream of. This isn’t gimmickry. It’s synergy.

Musically, BlackLight sit somewhere between the melancholy grandeur of Riverside, the intricate drama of Opeth, and the rhythmic precision of Tool, with a splash of Rush-ian ambition and a keyboard texture that wouldn’t feel out of place on a Dead Can Dance record. Maciej Majewski’s voice carries real weight, and his work on keys and guitar anchors a sound that’s both technical and deeply human.

And if you’re wondering how a prog-metal band ends up sharing a stage with young ballet students, well, that’s kind of the point. BlackLight don’t just play music. They build worlds. And this performance proves they’re not afraid to step outside the club, the festival stage, or even the genre’s usual boundaries.

Watch it now, because this is what happens when metal grows up and starts dancing:
