What's New: MARENE
Marene's "Nevermine" isn't a comeback, it's a neon apocalypse

Let’s be real: “synth-rock” has been watered down into elevator music for goths with side parts. But MARENE? These Cape Town maniacs don’t do trends, they ignite them. Their new EP Nevermine isn’t just a release. It’s a full-scale sensory coup, draped in leather, lit by strobes, and powered by pure, uncut vibe.
Five tracks. Zero compromises. Opener Finchie hits like a car crash in slow motion: equal parts 80s heartthrob ballad and stadium-sized riff therapy. It’s the kind of song that should play in slow-mo during a movie scene where someone dramatically takes off their sunglasses… right before driving into a fireworks factory.
Then? Chaos. They cover Sabrina’s Boys (Summertime Love)...yes, that Sabrina, and somehow make it heavier. Synths blaze, drums pound like war signals, and suddenly, bubblegum pop feels like a rebellion. Follow that with their cover of The Church’s Reptile, all fog and dread, where every guitar echo feels like a knife sliding between your ribs.
And the 2025 remixes of Something’s Out There and Bad Intentions? Not just remastered, re-armed. The production (Tyler Duggan on the boards, Eamon Gleeson sharpening the blades) is slick but never sterile. It breathes. It sweats. Maronay Todkill’s synths swirl like smoke machines possessed by ghosts, and Skye Nagel’s drums? They don’t keep time, they command it.
I’ll admit it: I rolled my eyes at “Flash Rock” at first. Sounded like a PR stunt. But after Nevermine, I get it. This isn’t just rock with synths slapped on. It’s theatrical, yes, but with teeth. It’s glam without the glitter, new wave without the naivety. It’s what’d happen if The Killers got into a bar fight with Rammstein… and won.
Since 2018, MARENE’s been building this storm, from Time Machine to Rising After Midnight, but Nevermine feels like the moment the lightning strikes. Their live shows (RAMFest, WinterFest, national TV meltdowns) are already legendary. Now, the studio finally catches up to the chaos.
This isn’t background music. It’s a statement. Loud, proud, and drenched in neon.
So stop calling it “retro.” This is now. And MARENE are leading the charge.
