EX AEGIS: The Hard Rock Revival We Actually Need

Back in the ‘90s, when grunge was busy killing hair metal and nu-metal was still figuring out its identity crisis, EX AEGIS must’ve been taking notes, because their debut sounds like the lovechild of Van Halen’s swagger, Queensrÿche’s soaring harmonies, and Ozzy’s dark theatricality, without the cheese. Formed in 2019 by guitarists Scott Allen and Ryan Bowe (two pros who’ve clearly spent more time in studios than in corporate meetings), the band set out to prove that Metal doesn’t need to be extreme to be exciting.
Then came Judith Morgan. A vocalist who doesn’t just hit notes, she weapons them. Whether she’s crooning like a siren or unleashing a banshee wail, she’s the missing piece that turns solid riffs into anthems. Backed by Alex Bosson’s thunderous drumming and Tom Frost’s razor-sharp production, EX AEGIS doesn’t just play songs: they build monuments.
What’s refreshing? They remember that Metal is supposed to be fun. No overblown "revolutionary" claims, no forced brutality, just great songs with hooks sharp enough to draw blood. The solos serve the music, not the other way around. The riffs hit like a bar fight, the choruses stick like glue, and the whole thing feels alive in a way that too much modern Metal forgets.
Their debut is a middle finger to the idea that Metal’s best days are behind it, proof that you can worship the past without being its prisoner.
