1991, Orléans, France. Two brothers, Laurent "Roub" Lahierle (guitar/vocals), Olivier "No Hell" Lahierle (drums), and Pascal "Guez" Grégoire (bass) decide to spit in the face of trends and form Capharnaüm. Their 1991 demo (Some Still Universe, The New Poor of the New Rich, etc.) was four tracks of pure, unfiltered thrash, raw enough to peel paint off walls. They tore up stages opening for Thugs, Mad Monster Party, and Mercyless, proving they weren’t just another band: they were a fucking force.

Leur démo de 1991 (Some Still Universe, The New Poor of the New Rich, etc.) comptait quatre morceaux de thrash pur et non filtré, suffisamment brut pour écailler la peinture des murs. Ils déchiraient les scènes en ouverture de Thugs, Mad Monster Party et Mercyless, prouvant qu’ils n’étaient pas juste un autre groupe : c’était une putain de force.

Then came 1993’s self-titled album: 12 tracks of US-style thrash with a French twist, self-produced, limited to 600 copies, and loved by the press (Metal Hammer France, Best, etc.). But the thrash wave was fading, and despite the glowing reviews, Capharnaüm faded into the underground. Olivier left, the lineup shifted like sand in a storm, and by 1998, they were gone, but not before leaving behind a live bootleg from 1994 that proved they burned brighter on stage than most bands ever did.

Puis vint l’album éponyme de 1993 : 12 morceaux de thrash à l’américaine avec une touche française, auto-produit, limité à 600 exemplaires, et adoré par la presse (Metal Hammer France, Best, etc.). Mais la vague thrash s’estompait, et malgré les critiques élogieuses, Capharnaüm a sombré dans l’underground. Olivier est parti, la formation a changé comme le sable dans une tempête, et en 1998, ils avaient disparu, mais pas avant d’avoir laissé un bootleg live de 1994 prouvant qu’ils brûlaient plus fort sur scène que la plupart des groupes ne le firent jamais.

Fast forward to 2022, and Lost Realm Records gives this lost classic the reissue it deserves: original album, demo tracks, and live cuts, all remastered and ready to rip. And Laurent? He didn’t just disappear: he kept the metal flame alive with Metal Forever on Radio Morvan and a 20-year career as a rare book dealer (because of course a thrash legend would also be a 16th-century book nerd).

Sautons jusqu’en 2022, et Lost Realm Records offre à ce classique perdu la réédition qu’il mérite : l’album original, les morceaux de la démo, et des enregistrements live, le tout remasterisé et prêt à déchirer. Et Laurent ? Il n’a pas juste disparu : il a maintenu la flamme du metal vivante avec Metal Forever sur Radio Morvan et une carrière de 20 ans en tant que marchand de livres rares (parce qu’évidemment, une légende du thrash est aussi une pipelette de livres du XVIe siècle).

So if you missed Capharnaüm the first time, now’s your chance to rectify that mistake. It’s a time capsule of French thrash at its rawest, most uncompromising. Stream it, blast it, and let it remind you why the ‘90s ruled.
