PORTUGUESE HEAVY METAL WITH ANCIENT EGYPTIAN SOUL

I was just digging through some new releases when I stumbled upon Sandmind, and honestly, I haven't been this blindsided by a debut in a while. Their first single "Múmia" is out now, and it's a total desert storm of a track.

Je fouillais dans les nouvelles sorties quand je suis tombé sur Sandmind, et honnêtement, je n'avais pas été autant pris de court par des débuts depuis longtemps. Leur premier single « Múmia » est sorti, et c'est un vrai orage du désert.

Now here's the interesting part: this band only formed in late 2022, but they sound like they've been haunting the Portuguese scene for decades. Coming from Portugal, they've managed to take that classic Heavy Metal foundation and inject it with a much grittier, aggressive edge. The new album, 13 Pragas Infernais (dropping April 13th via Firecum Records), is fully sung in Portuguese, and it's entirely themed around Ancient Egypt.

Le truc intéressant : le groupe ne s'est formé que fin 2022, mais ils sonnent comme s'ils hantaient la scène portugaise depuis des décennies. Originaires du Portugal, ils ont réussi à prendre les bases du Heavy Metal classique et à y injecter un tranchant plus agressif et granuleux. Le nouvel album, 13 Pragas Infernais (sortie le 13 avril chez Firecum Records), est entièrement chanté en portugais et entièrement consacré à l'Égypte ancienne.

The sound is thick, hugely atmospheric but with these sharp, classic riffs that keep everything grounded. I actually had to stop what I was doing when the vocals kicked in around 30 seconds, okay, wait, "stop" isn't the right word. I basically just sat there staring at my speakers because the weight of the track is so unexpected. It's got that Moonspell-esque darkness but with a punch that feels more like Lamb of God or Machine Head.

Le son est épais, énormément atmosphérique mais avec ces riffs aiguisés et classiques qui gardent tout ancré. J'ai dû m'arrêter quand la voix a démarré vers 30 secondes, enfin, « m'arrêter » n'est pas le bon mot. Je suis resté là à fixer mes enceintes parce que le poids du morceau est si inattendu. Il a cette noirceur à la Moonspell mais avec un punch qui évoque plutôt Lamb of God ou Machine Head.

Actually... no, "weight" doesn't even cover it. It's more like being buried in sand. En fait… non, « poids » ne suffit même pas. C'est plutôt comme être enterré dans le sable.

I was about to reply to an email when the main hook of "Múmia" started looping in my head, and I just gave up and hit replay. The storytelling is vivid, and the decision to sing in their native tongue gives the whole thing a ritualistic, authentic vibe that you just don't get with standard English lyrics. I mean, seriously, the atmosphere is monstrous.

J'allais répondre à un mail quand le riff principal de « Múmia » a commencé à tourner en boucle dans ma tête, et j'ai abandonné pour réécouter. La narration est vivante, et le choix de chanter dans leur langue maternelle donne un côté rituel et authentique qu'on n'a pas avec des paroles en anglais standard. Sérieusement, l'atmosphère est monstrueuse.

If you're a fan of Iron Maiden's epic scale but you want something with a lot more dirt under its fingernails, you need to hear this. The tracklist is a literal journey through Egyptian mythology, and if the rest of the album is as punishing as this first single, April 13th is going to be a heavy day. No joke.

Si vous aimez l'échelle épique d'Iron Maiden mais que vous voulez quelque chose avec beaucoup plus de crasse sous les ongles, il faut écouter ça. La tracklist est un véritable voyage à travers la mythologie égyptienne, et si le reste de l'album est aussi punitif que ce premier single, le 13 avril va être un jour lourd. Sans déconner.
