If you've spent any time in the grimy corners of Canadian cult TV, you probably remember the spandex and the pepperettes. After a decade of being mostly a memory, Hamilton's loudest "rock n' roll carnivores" are back in the shop. Sons of Butcher just dropped their new EP, Skids, and it's a total blast of grease-stained, heavy-riffing comedy that feels like a high-speed chase through a back alley.

Après une décennie à n'être plus qu'un souvenir, les plus bruyants « carnivores rock n' roll » d'Hamilton sont de retour à l'atelier. Sons of Butcher vient de sortir son nouvel EP, Skids, et c'est une véritable explosion de comédie grasse, de riffs lourds et de taches de cambouis qui ressemble à une course-poursuite enragée dans une ruelle.

What's interesting about this release is that it's the first time Ricky Butcher and the gang have stepped away from the Teletoon cartoon storylines. This is just pure, unfiltered SOB. They recorded it with Jordon Zadorozny at Skylark Park, and they even managed to get Kellii Scott (from the band Failure) behind the drum kit for the studio sessions. The result? It's probably the most polished they've ever sounded, but don't worry, the heart is still as filthy as a Steeltown gutter.

Ce qui est intéressant avec cette sortie, c'est que c'est la première fois que Ricky Butcher et la bande s'éloignent des intrigues du dessin animé de Teletoon. C'est du SOB pur, sans filtre. Ils ont enregistré avec Jordon Zadorozny au Skylark Park, et ils ont même réussi à faire asseoir Kellii Scott (du groupe Failure) derrière la batterie pour les sessions studio. Le résultat ? C'est probablement le son le plus propre qu'ils aient jamais eu, mais rassurez-vous, le cœur est toujours aussi sale qu'un caniveau de Steeltown.

The lead track, "Denim Dreamin'," is a surprisingly catchy anthem for anyone who treats their battle vest like a second skin. It's followed by "Makin' Bacon," which is exactly the kind of riff-heavy, metal-forward madness you'd expect from a band of has-been butchers. They even dug up an old "lost" track, "Peppercorn Steak," and finally gave it the chunky, soaring production it deserved.

If you're in Ontario or Quebec this April, you've got to catch them live. They're hitting the road with the legendary B.A. Johnston for five shows, which is basically a guaranteed recipe for chaos, cheap beer, and a lot of denim. Le morceau principal, « Denim Dreamin' », est un hymne étonnamment accrocheur pour tous ceux qui traitent leur gilet de combat comme une seconde peau. Il est suivi par « Makin' Bacon », qui est exactement le genre de folie metal, de riffs lourds qu'on attend d'un groupe de bouchers has-been. Ils ont même déterré un vieux morceau « perdu », « Peppercorn Steak », pour lui offrir la production massive et majestueuse qu'il méritait.

Si vous êtes en Ontario ou au Québec ce mois d'avril, il faut absolument les voir en live. Ils partent en tournée avec le légendaire B.A. Johnston pour cinq dates, ce qui est une garantie de chaos, de bière pas chère et de beaucoup de denim.
