RIFFAGE, RUIN, AND BUDAPEST BRUTALITY

Before We Fall have been lurking around since 2018. Started as a studio project, apparently, but they eventually grew into a proper five-piece. Good. Metal needs that actual flesh-and-blood friction. This new single, "Synthetic Life," is our latest taste of what these Budapest guys are doing, and it hits like a lead pipe to the shins. It's the title track of their debut album.

Before We Fall traîne dans le coin depuis 2018. Apparemment, c'était un projet studio au départ, mais ils ont fini par devenir un vrai quintet. Tant mieux. Le metal a besoin de cette friction bien réelle. Ce nouveau single, « Synthetic Life », est notre dernier aperçu de ce que ces gars de Budapest font, et ça frappe comme un tuyau de plomb sur les tibias. C'est le morceau-titre de leur premier album.

Let's talk about the sound. István Diószegi tracked this down at Stray Heart Records, and István Simon handled the mix and master over at No Silence Studio. You can tell. It's loud. The production leans heavily into that massive, pristine modern crunch, which usually annoys me, but here? It actually works. Maybe because the rhythm section, Csécsei Szabolcs on bass and Táncos Bence on drums, just locks in and refuses to let go.

Parlons du son. István Diószegi l'a enregistré au Stray Heart Records, et István Simon s'est occupé du mix et du mastering au No Silence Studio. Ça s'entend. C'est fort. La production mise beaucoup sur ce crunch moderne massif et impeccable, ce qui m'agace généralement, mais ici ? Ça fonctionne. Peut-être parce que la section rythmique, Csécsei Szabolcs à la basse et Táncos Bence à la batterie, se verrouille et ne lâche rien.

Then you've got the guitars. Róth Henrik and Tagscherer István just trade these blunt, heavy riffs that anchor the whole track. It's not flashy, but it gets under your skin. The dual-vocal dynamic between Takács Attila and Henrik gives the track a weird, schizophrenic energy. One second it's a gut-punch, the next it's floating. It wanders a bit in the middle. A bit messy, maybe. But honestly, after their previous EPs Leaves and Healed by Fear, this feels like they finally figured out how to weaponize their anxiety. It's not perfect, but it's real.

Ensuite, il y a les guitares. Róth Henrik et Tagscherer István échangent ces riffs contondants et lourds qui ancrent tout le morceau. Ce n'est pas tape-à-l'œil, mais ça vous colle à la peau. La dynamique à deux voix entre Takács Attila et Henrik donne au morceau une énergie étrange, presque schizophrénique. Une seconde, c'est un coup de poing, la suivante, ça flotte. Ça divague un peu au milieu. Un peu brouillon, peut-être. Mais honnêtement, après leurs EPs Leaves et Healed by Fear, on a l'impression qu'ils ont enfin compris comment utiliser leur anxiété comme une arme. Ce n'est pas parfait, mais c'est vrai.
