New Release: Blood Python
DARK SYNTH AND ANALOG DUST FROM OSLO
I usually brace myself for the worst when a band labels themselves "Occult Rock" these days. It usually means a lazy Ghost rip-off with clean production and zero balls. Thankfully, Oslo's Blood Python is still doing things the old, ugly way on their third full-length, Voidseeker. Released independently as a digital-only drop, this thing is soaked in raw, 80s cassette culture.
Je me prépare généralement au pire quand un groupe se qualifie de « Occult Rock » de nos jours. Cela signifie généralement une imitation paresseuse de Ghost avec une production propre et zéro couilles. Heureusement, Blood Python d'Oslo fait toujours les choses à l'ancienne, de manière moche, sur son troisième album, Voidseeker. Sorti en indépendant uniquement en digital, ce truc est imprégné de la culture brute des cassettes des années 80.
They've always had a stubborn lo-fi edge, stretching back from their Acheron demo to 2023's Thunder City. Voidseeker pushes that underground charm into even darker corners. You get the traditional NWOBHM-style bangers you'd expect if you worship Angel Witch or Heavy Load, but then they throw in these fast thrashers and weird, experimental synth-based tracks. It's a bit jarring. One minute you're banging your head to heavy riffs, the next you're floating in some eerie, electronic forest atmosphere. Not sure why, but the weird synth tracks don't ruin the vibe. They actually make the whole thing feel more haunting.
Ils ont toujours eu un côté lo-fi obstiné, de leur démo Acheron à Thunder City en 2023. Voidseeker pousse ce charme underground dans des recoins encore plus sombres. On y trouve les morceaux traditionnels à la NWOBHM qu'on attend si on vénère Angel Witch ou Heavy Load, mais ils y ajoutent aussi des thrashers rapides et des morceaux expérimentaux bizarres à base de synthés. C'est un peu déconcertant. Une minute, vous headbanguez sur des riffs lourds, la suivante, vous flottez dans une étrange atmosphère électronique de forêt. Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais ces morceaux de synthé bizarres ne gâchent rien. Ils rendent même l'ensemble plus obsédant.
The vocals are still delightfully unpolished, and the songwriting has a strange depth to it that keeps it from sounding like cheap nostalgia. It's not a perfect record, the transition between the fast thrash parts and the minimal synth stuff feels slightly messy in places, but the raw energy is entirely genuine.
Le chant est encore délicieusement brut, et l'écriture a une étrange profondeur qui évite la nostalgie bon marché. Ce n'est pas un disque parfait, la transition entre les parties thrash rapides et les trucs minimalistes de synthé est un peu brouillon par endroits, mais l'énergie brute est totalement authentique.
If you miss the days when traditional heavy metal sounded dangerous and slightly cheap, don't sleep on this. Go dig it up.
Si les jours où le heavy metal traditionnel sonnait dangereux et légèrement bon marché vous manquent, ne passez pas à côté. Allez le dénicher.
