Upcoming Release: ART EST

TOO MANY NOTES, TOO MANY DEMONS

Germany's ART|EST are dropping Evil Embodiment on June 6, and I still don't really know if I'm into it or just overwhelmed by it. It's technical death metal, yes, but it doesn't feel like it's trying to impress in a clean way. It feels more like it's dragging you into something dense and uncomfortable.

C'est du death metal technique, oui, mais ça n'essaie pas d'impressionner de manière propre. C'est plutôt comme si ça vous traînait dans quelque chose de dense et d'inconfortable.

People keep comparing them to Archspire or Cytotoxin, and yeah, I get it, but it feels more claustrophobic than flashy to me. Less about showing off, more about just piling pressure until something gives. There's this constant sense that everything is slightly too tight, like the music is actively resisting breathing.

Les gens les comparent à Archspire ou Cytotoxin, et oui, je comprends, mais cela me semble plus claustrophobique que tape-à-l'œil. Moins une question de frime, plus une question d'accumuler la pression jusqu'à ce que quelque chose lâche. Il y a ce sentiment constant que tout est légèrement trop serré, comme si la musique résistait activement à la respiration.

Conceptually, it's all the usual territory on paper: demonic possession, shadow realms, that whole post-death uncertainty thing. I'm usually pretty tired of that kind of imagery, but here it doesn't feel totally decorative. It feels like it's actually affecting the way the songs move, even if the ideas themselves aren't new.

Sur le papier, le concept est assez classique : possession démoniaque, royaumes d'ombre, toute cette incertitude post-mortem. Je suis généralement fatigué de ce genre d'imagerie, mais ici ça ne semble pas totalement décoratif. On a l'impression que cela affecte réellement la façon dont les chansons se déploient, même si les idées elles-mêmes ne sont pas nouvelles.

Tracks like "Demonic Insurrection" and "Vale of Shadows" are intense, almost exhausting in places. There are moments where I lose track of what's going on, but it still somehow holds my attention. The playing is precise, fast, almost overwhelming, and at times it feels like technicality is doing more of the work than atmosphere.

Des morceaux comme « Demonic Insurrection » et « Vale of Shadows » sont intenses, presque épuisants par endroits. Il y a des moments où je perds le fil, mais ça parvient quand même à retenir mon attention. Le jeu est précis, rapide, presque accablant, et parfois on a l'impression que la technicité fait plus le travail que l'atmosphère.

Guest spots from Flexxer on "Godless Infestation" and Luca Vi on "Rites of Revocation" don't really change the direction, but they add some texture. The latter was already released earlier this year via Slam Worldwide, which kind of locks it into the promotional cycle more than anything else.

Les apparitions de Flexxer sur « Godless Infestation » et de Luca Vi sur « Rites of Revocation » ne changent pas vraiment la direction, mais elles ajoutent un peu de texture. Ce dernier morceau était déjà sorti plus tôt cette année via Slam Worldwide, ce qui l'inscrit surtout dans le cycle promotionnel.

The record works best when it slows down, when it stops trying to constantly prove how fast or dense it can be. Those moments feel darker, less controlled, more unsettling in a way that sticks. I wish there were more of that.

Le disque fonctionne mieux quand il ralentit, quand il arrête d'essayer de prouver constamment à quel point il peut être rapide ou dense. Ces moments sont plus sombres, moins contrôlés, plus dérangeants d'une manière qui reste. J'aurais aimé qu'il y en ait plus.

I don't think I'll revisit Evil Embodiment often, but I also can't say it didn't leave an impression. It sits in that uncomfortable space between respect and fatigue, and I'm still not sure which side wins.

Je ne pense pas que je réécouterai Evil Embodiment souvent, mais je ne peux pas dire qu'il n'a pas laissé d'impression. Il se situe dans cet espace inconfortable entre le respect et la fatigue, et je ne sais toujours pas quel camp l'emporte.
