I've had "Tao To Earth" playing on repeat for the last twenty minutes, and honestly, my mind keeps drifting away from the music and then snapping back to it like a rubber band. It's raining outside, the sky is that miserable, heavy grey, and this new Abrasive Trees album "Light Remaining" is doing weird things to my focus.
J'écoute « Tao To Earth » en boucle depuis vingt minutes, et honnêtement, mon esprit ne cesse de s'éloigner de la musique avant de revenir brusquement, comme un élastique. Il pleut dehors, le ciel est d'un gris lourd et morose, et ce nouvel album d'Abrasive Trees, « Light Remaining », fait des choses étranges à ma concentration.
They're labeled as experimental rock, coming out of the UK on Argonauta Records, but it's the layout of the tracklist that got me first. Right in the middle, there's "Flickering Flame" followed by "Carved Skull." I don't know why, but just reading those titles back-to-back made me uneasy. It feels less like an album and more like a collection of objects left behind in a room you weren't supposed to enter.
Ils sont étiquetés rock expérimental, venus du Royaume-Uni sur Argonauta Records, mais c'est l'agencement de la tracklist qui m'a d'abord frappé. En plein milieu, il y a « Flickering Flame » suivi de « Carved Skull ». Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais rien que de lire ces titres l'un après l'autre m'a mis mal à l'aise. Cela ressemble moins à un album qu'à une collection d'objets abandonnés dans une pièce où vous n'auriez pas dû entrer.
The press notes mention influences like Swans and Bark Psychosis, and yeah, you can feel that hypnotic, heavy repetition rolling in. Matthew Rochford and the rest of the band are doing something with the guitars here that feels incredibly dense, but my ears keep getting tripped up by the dynamic shifts. One minute it's just this hovering, tense instrumental passage, and then the vocals come in.
Les notes de presse mentionnent des influences comme Swans et Bark Psychosis, et oui, on sent cette répétition hypnotique et lourde s'installer. Matthew Rochford et le reste du groupe font quelque chose avec les guitares qui semble incroyablement dense, mais mes oreilles sont déconcertées par les changements de dynamique. Une minute, c'est juste un passage instrumental planant et tendu, puis la voix entre.
They say the album explores themes of loss and inner reckoning. Maybe that's what's bleeding through. It's not an easy listen, and I still haven't quite figured out how the neofolk-ish undertones match the heavier drone, but I'm too far in now to turn it off.

Ce n'est pas une écoute facile, et je n'ai pas encore compris comment les sous-entendus néofolk s'accordent avec le drone plus lourd, mais je suis trop investi pour l'arrêter maintenant.
