GERMAN DEATH-THRASH WITH A SOLID STUDIO PEDIGREE
I wasn't expecting much when the first DOGTAK demo started playing. A debut EP, a band I'd never heard of, and a name that sounds like it belongs to a crossover act from the late '80s. A few minutes later, I found myself going back to the opening riff just to make sure it had hit as hard as I remembered.
Je ne m'attendais pas à grand-chose quand la première démo de DOGTAK a commencé. Un premier EP, un groupe dont je n'avais jamais entendu parler, et un nom qui sonne comme un groupe de crossover de la fin des années 80. Quelques minutes plus tard, je suis retourné sur le riff d'ouverture juste pour m'assurer qu'il avait frappé aussi fort que je m'en souvenais.
DOGTAK are a five-piece from Germany preparing to release their debut EP, "Shattered Reflection", on August 21st, 2026. Although the full band only came together last year, the musicians have all spent years in various underground projects, and that experience shows almost immediately.

Bien que le groupe complet ne se soit formé que l'année dernière, les musiciens ont tous passé des années dans divers projets underground, et cette expérience se fait sentir presque immédiatement.
The project originally began as guitarist Björn Condon's solo instrumental idea before evolving into a full band. What comes across on these demo tracks isn't chaos or raw rehearsal-room noise, but a tight blend of death and thrash metal that leans into a distinctly European groove. Fans of bands like Dew-Scented or Denmark's Illdisposed will probably recognise that same balance between aggression and control.
Le projet a commencé comme une idée instrumentale solo du guitariste Björn Condon avant d'évoluer en un groupe complet. Ce qui ressort sur ces titres démo, ce n'est pas du chaos ou du bruit de salle de répétition, mais un mélange serré de death et thrash metal qui penche vers un groove résolument européen. Les fans de groupes comme Dew-Scented ou les Danois d'Illdisposed reconnaîtront probablement cet équilibre entre agression et contrôle.
The lyrics explore fractured identities, isolation and damaged minds. Instead, I kept paying attention to how naturally Gero Samrey's drumming locks everything together. The dual-guitar work from Condon and Sören "Rippy" Schwartau never feels like a competition; it simply keeps pushing the songs forward without becoming overcomplicated.
Les paroles explorent les identités fracturées, l'isolement et les esprits endommagés. Mais je n'arrêtais pas de prêter attention à la façon dont la batterie de Gero Samrey verrouille naturellement tout l'ensemble. Le travail à deux guitares de Condon et Sören « Rippy » Schwartau ne ressemble jamais à une compétition ; il pousse simplement les chansons vers l'avant sans devenir trop compliqué.
What surprised me most is how confident these demos already sound. I actually had to double-check that this wasn't the band's second release rather than its first. The production has enough weight to feel modern, but it avoids that over-edited polish that can flatten this kind of music. There are still little rough edges here and there, and they work in the band's favour.
Ce qui m'a le plus surpris, c'est à quel point ces démos sonnent déjà confiantes. J'ai dû vérifier deux fois que ce n'était pas la deuxième sortie du groupe plutôt que la première. La production a assez de poids pour sembler moderne, mais elle évite ce polissage excessif qui peut aplatir ce genre de musique. Il y a encore quelques petites aspérités ici et là, et elles jouent en faveur du groupe.
By the end of the last demo, I wasn't thinking about influences anymore. I was mostly wondering whether these songs will carry the same energy on stage. If they do, *Shattered Reflection* could be a very promising first step rather than just another debut release that disappears after a few weeks.
À la fin de la dernière démo, je ne pensais plus aux influences. Je me demandais surtout si ces chansons porteront la même énergie sur scène. Si c'est le cas, *Shattered Reflection* pourrait être un premier pas très prometteur plutôt qu'une énième sortie qui disparaît au bout de quelques semaines.
The EP arrives on August 21st on CD and digital formats. Until then, the demo tracks on Bandcamp offer a solid preview of where DOGTAK seem to be heading.
