THAT CYBER-METALCORE VIBE FROM FRANCE

We gave the new Heartlay single a spin because that mix of Nine Inch Nails industrialism and Motionless In White energy sounded like exactly what the office needed to wake up today. I wasn't really expecting to overthink it this much, but here we are. The track is called "Here Lies The Flame," and it dropped a few days ago on June 5th through An Exile.

Nous avons écouté le nouveau single de Heartlay parce que ce mélange d'industrialisme à la Nine Inch Nails et d'énergie à la Motionless In White semblait être exactement ce qu'il fallait au bureau pour nous réveiller aujourd'hui. Je ne m'attendais pas à trop réfléchir, mais me voilà. Le morceau s'intitule « Here Lies The Flame », et il est sorti il y a quelques jours, le 5 juin, via An Exile.

The whole thing was written and produced by Aaron Sadrin, and you can immediately hear he knows exactly how to layer electronic glitches under heavy metalcore riffs. Half the time I wasn't even sure if I liked it or if I was just reacting to how clean everything sounded. Half the crew was into the massive melodic hook in the chorus, while the other half felt like the "cinematic" atmosphere swallowed a bit of the raw grit we usually look for in modern metal.

L'ensemble a été écrit et produit par Aaron Sadrin, et on entend immédiatement qu'il sait exactement comment superposer des glitches électroniques sous des riffs metalcore lourds. La moitié du temps, je ne savais même pas si j'aimais ça ou si je réagissais simplement à la propreté de tout. La moitié de l'équipe a accroché à l'énorme refrain mélodique, tandis que l'autre moitié trouvait que l'ambiance « cinématographique » engloutissait un peu de la rugosité brute que nous recherchons habituellement dans le metal moderne.

I had to replay the chorus once just because I got distracted checking something unrelated on my phone, and when I came back into it the whole thing felt slightly different for a second. I don't even know if that matters, but it stuck.

J'ai dû réécouter le refrain une fois parce que j'étais distrait par quelque chose sur mon téléphone, et quand je suis revenu, l'ensemble m'a semblé légèrement différent pendant une seconde. Je ne sais même pas si c'est important, mais ça m'est resté.

We're still debating whether the electronic textures push it too far into the mainstream industrial-rock territory, I don't even know if "industrial" is the right word here, but it's the one that keeps coming to mind, but the balance doesn't totally break. It's out now on digital formats, and they've got a sleek music video up on YouTube if you want to judge the visual side for yourself. Nous débattons encore pour savoir si les textures électroniques le poussent trop loin vers le territoire industrial-rock mainstream – je ne sais même pas si « industrial » est le bon mot, mais c'est celui qui me vient à l'esprit – mais l'équilibre ne se rompt pas totalement. C'est disponible en format numérique, et ils ont un clip vidéo soigné sur YouTube si vous voulez juger par vous-même. Si vous êtes coincé dans une boucle de Bad Omens et que vous avez besoin de fraîcheur, ça vaut vraiment le coup de jeter un œil aux liens Bandcamp ou Spotify ci-dessous.

After a few listens it starts blending together more than I expected, which I can't tell if is a good sign or just fatigue setting in.
Let's see if the rest of their material keeps this intensity or leans even harder into the synth hooks. I might be overthinking it already, but that seems kind of unavoidable with this kind of sound.

Après plusieurs écoutes, ça commence à se mélanger plus que je ne l'aurais imaginé, ce dont je ne sais pas si c'est bon signe ou simplement la fatigue qui s'installe.
Voyons si le reste de leur matériel garde cette intensité ou s'enfonce encore plus dans les accroches synthétiques. Je suis peut-être déjà en train de trop réfléchir, mais cela semble inévitable avec ce genre de son.
