We've just been sitting here absorbing "Woven Linen," the brand new single and video from New York trio Mama Doom. The track is the second glimpse into their upcoming album Eminent Womb, which is scheduled to drop on September 26th, 2026, through Argonauta Records on CD, digital, and a limited "Ultra Clear with White Smoke" vinyl edition.

When a band starts throwing around self-made genre tags like "Coven Core" and fills a press kit with phrases about ethereal darkness, feminine power, and gothic psychedelia, I usually expect something that looks better on paper than it sounds through speakers. The first minute of "Woven Linen" had me wondering if that was exactly where this was heading. Then the bass kicked in properly and the whole thing started making a lot more sense.

Quand un groupe commence à balancer des étiquettes de genre maison comme « Coven Core » et remplit un dossier de presse de phrases sur l'obscurité éthérée, le pouvoir féminin et la psychédélie gothique, je m'attends généralement à quelque chose qui rend mieux sur le papier qu'à travers les enceintes. La première minute de « Woven Linen » m'a fait me demander si c'était exactement là où ça allait. Puis la basse a vraiment démarré et tout a commencé à avoir beaucoup plus de sens.

The actual foundation of the band is surprisingly stripped down. Heather D. Lolli handles keyboards and vocals, Chuckie Rumbles takes care of bass duties, and Anne Terror sits behind the drums. There's no giant wall of orchestration trying to manufacture atmosphere. Instead, the music feels oddly skeletal and heavy at the same time. At one point I actually glanced at the lineup again because the sound feels bigger than three people should reasonably be making.

La base du groupe est étonnamment dépouillée. Heather D. Lolli s'occupe des claviers et du chant, Chuckie Rumbles de la basse, et Anne Terror est derrière la batterie. Pas d'énorme mur d'orchestration pour fabriquer une atmosphère. La musique semble étrangement squelettique et lourde à la fois. À un moment, j'ai regardé la formation une seconde fois parce que le son semble plus gros que ce que trois personnes devraient raisonnablement produire.

The band mentions that the recording sessions involved practical jokes aimed at their bassist, which is funny considering how relentlessly bleak the music feels. There's something oddly human about reading that and then immediately hearing these slow, hypnotic doom passages that sound like they were recorded in a candlelit basement somewhere.

Le groupe mentionne que les sessions d'enregistrement ont impliqué des blagues pratiques visant leur bassiste, ce qui est amusant vu à quel point la musique semble impitoyablement sombre. Il y a quelque chose d'étrangement humain à lire ça et à entendre immédiatement ces passages doom lents et hypnotiques qui semblent enregistrés dans un sous-sol éclairé à la bougie.

The biggest rabbit hole, though, is the video itself. Directed by Grave Dave through Gratuitous Productions, it's a blood-soaked visual inspired by Suspiria, complete with white witch masks, a skeletal Saint Barbara, and a stuffed goat named Homer. Honestly, somewhere between the goat and the religious symbolism, I completely lost the thread of whatever deeper statement I was supposed to be following. I even rewound one section because I thought I had missed something important, but I'm still not convinced I understand half of what I watched.

Le plus gros trou noir, cependant, c'est la vidéo elle-même. Réalisée par Grave Dave via Gratuitous Productions, c'est un visuel sanglant inspiré de Suspiria, avec des masques de sorcière blanche, une Sainte Barbe squelettique, et une chèvre empaillée nommée Homer. Honnêtement, quelque part entre la chèvre et le symbolisme religieux, j'ai complètement perdu le fil de ce que j'étais censé suivre. J'ai même rembobiné une section parce que je pensais avoir raté quelque chose d'important, mais je ne suis toujours pas convaincu de comprendre la moitié de ce que j'ai regardé.

Maybe that's part of the appeal.
The song lingers in a strange way. Not because it has a huge chorus or some instantly memorable riff, but because it leaves behind a feeling that's difficult to pin down.

C'est peut-être ça, l'attrait.
La chanson reste d'une manière étrange. Pas parce qu'elle a un énorme refrain ou un riff immédiatement mémorable, mais parce qu'elle laisse derrière elle une sensation difficile à définir.

The album is still a few months away, but the video is already online if you want to experience the visual weirdness for yourself. Whether you connect with the symbolism or not, Mama Doom have definitely created something that stands apart from the usual doom-metal formula.

L'album est encore dans quelques mois, mais la vidéo est déjà en ligne si vous voulez expérimenter l'étrangeté visuelle par vous-même. Que vous adhériez au symbolisme ou non, Mama Doom a définitivement créé quelque chose qui se démarque de la formule habituelle du doom-metal.
