To Discover: The Funeral Procession
TEXAN MELODIC DEATH THAT ACTUALLY BREATHES
We've had Carrion on for the last 15 minutes, the new EP from The Funeral Procession, a progressive melodic death metal outfit from Texas. It's been out since April 27th, 2026, dropping independently as the follow-up to their debut In Still Silence. Honestly, when a press release starts throwing around numbers like 130K streams and boasting about winning a Dallas Wacken Metal Battle or opening for Orbit Culture, the room usually braces for some hyper-polished, over-engineered modern metal that sounds like it was made in a lab.
Nous avons écouté Carrion pendant les 15 dernières minutes, le nouvel EP de The Funeral Procession, un groupe de death metal mélodique progressif du Texas. Il est sorti le 27 avril 2026, en indépendant, comme la suite de leur premier album In Still Silence. Honnêtement, quand un communiqué de presse commence à balancer des chiffres comme 130K streams et à se vanter d'avoir remporté un Wacken Metal Battle à Dallas ou d'avoir fait la première partie d'Orbit Culture, on s'attend généralement à du metal moderne hyper-polished et sur-ingéniérisé qui sonne comme s'il avait été fabriqué en laboratoire.
Surprisingly, this doesn't do that. Musically, it's a massive wave of prog-death that feels way more European than Texan. They name-drop Opeth and Katatonia in the bio, and for once, that isn't just wishful thinking. The tracks move between these heavy, sorrowful passages and sudden, aggressive peaks where the technical precision actually serves the mood instead of just showing off. Greg Fender handled the mix and master, and he left enough space in the sound for the bleaker, atmospheric parts to feel genuinely heavy rather than just loud.
Étonnamment, ce n'est pas le cas. Musicalement, c'est une vague massive de prog-death qui semble bien plus européenne que texane. Ils citent Opeth et Katatonia dans leur bio, et pour une fois, ce n'est pas juste un vœu pieux. Les morceaux oscillent entre des passages lourds et mélancoliques et des pics agressifs où la précision technique sert réellement l'ambiance au lieu de simplement frimer. Greg Fender s'est occupé du mix et du mastering, et il a laissé assez d'espace dans le son pour que les parties atmosphériques et plus sombres soient vraiment lourdes plutôt que juste bruyantes.
Bryan Cox mentioned in the band statement that they're trying to weave between sorrow and anger, and halfway through the second track, I found myself just staring out the window, totally zoning out into the melodic riffs. At some point I realized I had completely forgotten the band was from Texas. The whole thing had drifted so far into that cold, melancholic European territory that the geographical detail just disappeared from my head. It's rare for a modern death metal EP to actually let the music breathe like this without forcing a breakdown down your throat every two minutes.
Bryan Cox a mentionné dans la déclaration du groupe qu'ils essaient de naviguer entre la tristesse et la colère, et à la moitié du deuxième morceau, je me suis surpris à fixer la fenêtre, complètement absorbé par les riffs mélodiques. À un moment donné, j'ai réalisé que j'avais complètement oublié que le groupe venait du Texas. L'ensemble avait tellement dérivé vers ce territoire européen froid et mélancolique que le détail géographique avait disparu de ma tête. C'est rare qu'un EP de death metal moderne laisse la musique respirer ainsi sans forcer un breakdown toutes les deux minutes.
The weird thing is that I expected the heavier moments to stick with me afterwards, but it was the quieter passages that kept replaying in my head once the EP was over. Those are usually the parts that get lost in this kind of music, yet here they end up carrying a lot of the emotional weight.
Ce qui est étrange, c'est que je m'attendais à ce que les moments les plus lourds me restent en tête, mais ce sont les passages plus calmes qui ont continué à tourner dans ma tête après la fin de l'EP. Ce sont généralement les parties qui se perdent dans ce genre de musique, mais ici, elles finissent par porter une grande partie du poids émotionnel.
