It wasn't the press sheet's laundry list of influences that got me to hit play on "Love of the Serpentine Eye": it was just plain curiosity about how a new Australian band handles that classic 90s gothic doom vibe in 2026. Mixing Type O Negative deep baritone vocals with 80s hard rock guitar flourishes is always a tricky tightrope walk. It's very easy to end up sounding like a cheesy tribute band. But right from the opening bars, Blackened Rose manage to pull it off with a lot of genuine heart.

C'est très facile de sonner comme un tribute band ringard. Mais dès les premières mesures, Blackened Rose parvient à le faire avec beaucoup de sincérité.

Aleksei Iagunkov's low, rumbling vocals immediately set a dark, dramatic tone, while the keyboards add just enough gloomy texture in the background without overwhelming the guitars. The moment that really sold me comes later in the song with that unrestrained, classic heavy metal guitar solo. It gives the track a sudden burst of raw, Sabbath‑style energy just when you think it's going to stay strictly in a slow, melancholic groove. One thing I also liked was how organic the production sounds: the drums sound like actual drums, giving the whole piece a warm, vintage weight.

Le moment qui m'a vraiment conquis vient plus tard dans la chanson avec ce solo de guitare heavy metal classique et débridé. Il donne au morceau une soudaine explosion d'énergie brute à la Sabbath, juste au moment où l'on pense qu'il va rester strictement dans un groove lent et mélancolique. Une chose que j'ai aussi appréciée, c'est à quel point la production sonne organique : la batterie sonne comme une vraie batterie, donnant à l'ensemble un poids chaleureux et vintage.
They aren't trying to complicate things here. They're simply playing the music they love with solid songwriting and a dark, theatrical atmosphere that actually lands. Sometimes a band doesn't need to reinvent a genre. Sometimes reminding you why you loved it in the first place is enough.
