Some bands quietly disappear after a few years. Others survive because one person simply refuses to let them die. Bloodrunner firmly belong to that second category.

For more than twenty years, Neal Rodriguez has kept the Chicago project alive through lineup changes, changing musical trends and all the usual obstacles that come with being an independent metal band. Reading through Bloodrunner's history, you quickly realise that giving up has never really been part of the plan.

The band first emerged in 2004 with a group of high school friends before settling into a stable lineup a couple of years later. That period produced Total Annihilation, the band's debut album, and plenty of shows around the Midwest. Like so many underground bands, however, things eventually fell apart. By 2010 the original lineup had gone its separate ways, and for a while Bloodrunner seemed to have reached the end of the road.
Le groupe est apparu pour la première fois en 2004 avec un groupe d'amis du lycée avant de se stabiliser dans un line‑up fixe quelques années plus tard. Cette période a produit Total Annihilation, le premier album du groupe, et de nombreux concerts dans le Midwest. Comme tant de groupes underground, cependant, les choses ont fini par se défaire. En 2010, le line‑up original avait pris des chemins séparés, et pendant un moment, Bloodrunner semblait avoir atteint la fin du chemin.
Except it hadn't. Rodriguez stayed busy with other projects, including Chicago punk rock outfit The Upsets, but Bloodrunner never really disappeared. It simply waited for the right moment to return. Since reforming in 2020, the band has gone through yet another series of lineup changes, released new material, played extensively around Chicago and continued moving forward despite the constant rebuilding.
Sauf que ce n'était pas le cas. Rodriguez est resté actif avec d'autres projets, dont le groupe punk rock de Chicago The Upsets, mais Bloodrunner n'a jamais vraiment disparu. That persistence finally paid off when Golden Core Records gave Total Annihilation the treatment it had probably deserved from the beginning. The remastered edition, now available on both CD and vinyl, gives new life to an album that many underground fans may have missed the first time around.
Cette persévérance a finalement porté ses fruits lorsque Golden Core Records a donné à Total Annihilation le traitement qu'il méritait probablement depuis le début. What surprised me most, though, wasn't the reissue. It was Bloodrunner Unplugged. On paper, the idea of stripping a heavy, riff‑driven band down to an acoustic trio sounds like a risky move. In practice, it says a lot about Rodriguez's confidence in the songs themselves. Heavy guitars can hide a lot of weaknesses; acoustic arrangements rarely do.
Ce qui m'a le plus surpris, cependant, n'était pas la réédition. C'était Bloodrunner Unplugged. Sur le papier, l'idée de réduire un groupe heavy et axé sur les riffs à un trio acoustique semble risquée. More than anything, Bloodrunner's story isn't really about one album or one release. It's about perseverance. Few underground bands manage to survive for two decades without losing their identity somewhere along the way. Bloodrunner have taken the long road, stumbled more than once, rebuilt from the ground up several times, and somehow they're still here. Sometimes that's every bit as impressive as the music itself.
Plus que tout, l'histoire de Bloodrunner ne concerne pas vraiment un album ou une sortie. Il s'agit de persévérance. Peu de groupes underground parviennent à survivre pendant deux décennies sans perdre leur identité en cours de route. Bloodrunner a pris le chemin le plus long, a trébuché plus d'une fois, s'est reconstruit de zéro à plusieurs reprises, et d'une manière ou d'une autre, ils sont toujours là. Parfois, c'est tout aussi impressionnant que la musique elle‑même.
