To Discover: Dead Samaritan - "God Drug"
FINNISH DEATH/THRASH VETERANS DELIVER RELENTLESS RIFFS WITH DARK MELANCHOLIC HOOKS
Finns usually know a thing or two about balancing harsh brutality with melancholic melody, and Dead Samaritan have been refining that exact line for over two decades. On "God Drug", taken from their 2026 EP Overlord of Wasteland, what grabbed me early on wasn't even the speed. It was how naturally the guitar melodies kept surfacing through all that aggression. I caught myself humming one of those dark riff lines long after the track had finished, which isn't something I usually expect from a song this relentless.
Les Finlandais savent généralement une chose ou deux sur l'équilibre entre la brutalité agressive et la mélodie mélancolique, et Dead Samaritan peaufine cette ligne exacte depuis plus de deux décennies. Sur « God Drug », tiré de leur EP 2026 Overlord of Wasteland, ce qui m'a accroché dès le début n'était même pas la vitesse. C'était la manière naturelle dont les mélodies de guitare émergeaient à travers toute cette agression. Je me suis surpris à fredonner l'une de ces lignes de riff sombres bien après la fin du morceau, ce qui n'est pas quelque chose que j'attends habituellement d'une chanson aussi implacable.

The twin‑guitar work between Matti Viholainen and new recruit Joonas Konki doesn't just pile on noise. Instead, they weave dark, subtle hooks into a relentless rhythmic attack, anchored by Marko Saarinen's raspy, unpolished vocals. By the time the track ended, I found myself replaying it almost immediately. Not because it tries to reinvent death/thrash, but because it knows exactly what makes the style satisfying in the first place.
Le travail à deux guitares entre Matti Viholainen et le nouveau venu Joonas Konki ne se contente pas d'accumuler du bruit. Ils tissent plutôt des hooks sombres et subtils dans une attaque rythmique implacable, ancrée par la voix rauque et brute de Marko Saarinen. À la fin du morceau, je me suis surpris à le rejouer presque immédiatement. Pas parce qu'il essaie de réinventer le death/thrash, mais parce qu'il sait exactement ce qui rend le style satisfaisant.
