New Release: Mylingen - "Det inre mörkret"
SWEDISH DARK METAL MEETS PROGRESSIVE ROCK AND SCANDINAVIAN FOLKLORE
Funny enough, it wasn't the press sheet's mention of Opeth or Enslaved that got me into Det inre mörkret, it was the weird contrast between Swedish folklore, dark metal, and progressive rock spaceiness. When you hear a solo project handled almost entirely by one multi‑instrumentalist (Viktor Jonas, previously of Apathy Noir), there's always a slight risk of it feeling a bit rigid. But right from the opening tracks like "Vansinne" and "Utan mening," this album feels surprisingly fluid. Instead of just stacking heavy riffs on top of each other, Jonas leans heavily into an atmospheric, space‑rock edge that gives the dark Swedish vocals by Eric Holmberg plenty of room to breathe.
Curieusement, ce n'est pas la mention d'Opeth ou d'Enslaved dans le communiqué de presse qui m'a attiré vers Det inre mörkret, mais l'étrange contraste entre le folklore suédois, le metal sombre et l'ambiance space-rock progressive. Quand on écoute un projet solo géré presque entièrement par un seul multi‑instrumentiste (Viktor Jonas, anciennement d'Apathy Noir), il y a toujours un léger risque que cela semble un peu rigide. Mais dès les premiers morceaux comme « Vansinne » et « Utan mening », cet album semble étonnamment fluide. Au lieu de simplement empiler des riffs lourds les uns sur les autres, Jonas s'appuie largement sur un côté atmosphérique et space‑rock qui laisse aux voix suédoises sombres d'Eric Holmberg beaucoup d'espace pour respirer.
I wasn't expecting it to grab me this quickly. By the time "I mörkret" comes around, the Opeth and In The Woods... references start making sense, but the album slowly moves past its influences. Somewhere along the way, I stopped tracking where the sounds were coming from, the atmosphere simply took over. The guitars carry a warm, vintage depth, and the synth layers add subtle texture rather than taking space away from the songs. The more I listened, the more it felt like a record built with patience. Nothing here feels rushed. The band just lets the songs unfold, and somehow that makes the whole record even more absorbing.
Je ne m'attendais pas à ce que cela m'accroche aussi rapidement. Quand « I mörkret » arrive, les références à Opeth et In The Woods... commencent à avoir du sens, mais l'album dépasse lentement ses influences. À un moment donné, j'ai cessé de chercher d'où venaient les sons, l'atmosphère avait simplement pris le dessus. Les guitares portent une profondeur chaude et vintage, et les couches de synthé ajoutent une texture subtile sans prendre de place aux chansons. Plus j'écoutais, plus j'avais l'impression d'un album construit avec patience. Rien ici ne semble précipité. Le groupe laisse simplement les chansons se déployer, et d'une certaine manière, cela rend l'ensemble encore plus absorbant.
If you appreciate melancholic dark metal with strong progressive roots and a genuine Swedish identity, Det inre mörkret is definitely an album to sink into.
