HEAVY METAL MADNESS – TECHNICAL THRASH FROM FINLAND'S OULU SCENE
Finland's Oulu scene usually breeds cold, melancholic art, but Occult Master are pulling a complete u-turn on their roots. They started over a decade ago doing the slow, hazy heavy rock and doom thing. Then a 2020 lineup change completely broke the mold. Now, they play this bizarrely fast, rhythmic, complex hybrid that throws their old doom tags right out the window.
La scène d'Oulu en Finlande produit généralement un art froid et mélancolique, mais Occult Master fait un virage à 180 degrés. Ils ont commencé il y a plus de dix ans avec un heavy rock lent et brumeux. Puis un changement de line-up en 2020 a complètement brisé le moule. Aujourd'hui, ils jouent un hybride bizarrement rapide, rythmique et complexe qui jette leurs vieilles étiquettes doom par la fenêtre.
Their self-titled debut album lands August 14th, 2026, through Inverse Records. The new single, "Heavy Metal Madness," is the perfect example of their identity crisis, in a good way. The band calls it a raw homage to classic technical thrash, full of dark lyrics about mental decay and existential dread. Usually, when a band promises "technical interludes alternating with maddening logic," you prepare for an unlistenable math-metal headache. Instead, Ari Eskola pairs those twisted guitar riffs with a massive, anthemic chorus that immediately sticks in your skull.
Leur premier album éponyme sort le 14 août 2026 via Inverse Records. Le nouveau single, « Heavy Metal Madness », est l'exemple parfait de leur crise d'identité, dans le bon sens. Le groupe le qualifie d'hommage brut au thrash technique classique, avec des paroles sombres sur le déclin mental et l'angoisse existentielle. Habituellement, quand un groupe promet des « interludes techniques alternant avec une logique démente », on se prépare à une migraine math-metal inaudible. Au lieu de ça, Ari Eskola associe ces riffs tordus à un refrain massif et anthémique qui s'incruste immédiatement dans le crâne.
Eskola's guitar work on the track finishes with this massive, over-the-top hero solo that sounds like a total love letter to 1980s shredding. The rhythm section, Toni Mäki on bass and Jussi Risto on drums, drives the pace forward like a freight train, completely shedding that old, sleepy doom skin.
Le travail de guitare d'Eskola se termine par ce solo héroïque massif et démesuré qui ressemble à une véritable lettre d'amour au shredding des années 80. La section rythmique, Toni Mäki à la basse et Jussi Risto à la batterie, propulse le rythme comme un train de marchandises, se débarrassant complètement de cette vieille peau du doom endormi.
