In the case of Spanish outfit Song of Anhubis, their third full‑length album, Ravaged Rage, answers those questions pretty quickly. It doesn't sound like a band struggling to find its footing, it sounds like one that used those quiet years to figure out exactly who they want to be.

If you're discovering Song of Anhubis for the first time, looking back at their evolution makes this new release even more interesting. Starting out in the atmospheric gothic metal realm, nodding to acts like Theatre of Tragedy and The Gathering, before experimenting with electronics on 2020's Reversed Reflection, founding members Rei Veil and Polvareda Johnson have now pushed their sound into noticeably heavier, more direct territory with this independent July 1st release.

The first thing I noticed is how muscular and modern this record feels compared to their past work. The opener "Embrace Me, Andromeda" sets the tone right away with sharp, layered guitars and immediate aggression. It didn't take long before I realized Rei Veil isn't sticking strictly to traditional gothic vocals anymore: she shifts effortlessly between lyrical melodies and harsh, extreme screams.
La première chose que j'ai remarquée, c'est à quel point cet album semble musclé et moderne comparé à leurs travaux précédents. L'ouverture « Embrace Me, Andromeda » donne le ton immédiatement avec des guitares tranchantes et superposées et une agression immédiate. Il ne m'a pas fallu longtemps pour réaliser que Rei Veil ne s'en tient plus strictement aux vocaux gothiques traditionnels : elle passe sans effort des mélodies lyriques aux hurlements extrêmes et agressifs.
The album never stays in the same place for very long, finding a great flow between heavy drive and subtle electronic textures. "Tyranny of the Weak" delivers dense riffs and surgical drumming before giving way to symphonic layers, while "In This Immense Void" lets the vocals float over a much wider, atmospheric space. One of the most intriguing moments on the record is "El Vórtice en Mí": sung in Spanish, built on syncopated guitars and an electronic pulse that gives it a completely distinct personality.
L'album ne reste jamais très longtemps au même endroit, trouvant un bon équilibre entre lourdeur et textures électroniques subtiles. « Tyranny of the Weak » livre des riffs denses et une batterie chirurgicale avant de laisser place à des couches symphoniques, tandis que « In This Immense Void » laisse les voix flotter sur un espace atmosphérique beaucoup plus large. L'un des moments les plus intrigants de l'album est « El Vórtice en Mí » : chanté en espagnol, construit sur des guitares syncopées et une pulsation électronique qui lui donne une personnalité complètement distincte.
By the time I reached "Across the Tartarus," with its frantic riffing and blast of electronics bringing the record to a close, Ravaged Rage leaves a lasting impression. It sounds like a band that finally knows exactly where it wants to go, and chose to come back on its own terms.
