LONG‑LOST 1974 PROTO‑PUNK RELIC FEATURING BRIAN JAMES (THE DAMNED) & ALAN WARD
Hearing that lost 1974 tapes from Crawley with Brian James and Alan Ward were finally coming out via Wap Shoo Wap Records, my first reaction was to handle them with a bit of caution. Unreleased recordings from that era usually sound like mud or turn out to be cheap bootleg material. "Doctor Gong" kills that skepticism right away. It kicks off with this dark, heavy riff before launching into a nasty, driving rock beat. You can literally hear the groundwork for "New Rose" being laid down right there, years before The Damned even existed. Alan Ward's vocals carry that weird, aggressive edge, the kind of stuff they were pulling off in front of Hell's Angels and dive bar crowds while everyone else in Britain was still playing glam or prog rock.

I had to drop "Doctor Gong" just to double‑check that this was actually recorded in '74. If you're into the origins of UK proto‑punk and heavy rock, this 7‑inch is a crucial piece of history to grab.
« Comfort » semble plus brut et inachevé, presque comme une démo prise en pleine session, mais c'est exactement ce qui fait son charme. C'est bruyant, rapide et dépouillé. J'ai dû remettre « Doctor Gong » pour vérifier que cela avait vraiment été enregistré en 74.
