NORWEGIAN BLACK METAL MEETS JAPANESE FOLK IN A STRANGE, COLD, AND UNFORGETTABLE COLLISION
MorteMutta is one of those projects where you read the description and immediately wonder what the hell it's actually going to sound like. Formed back in 1999 as a joint effort between Norwegian musician DC and Japanese artist JJ, this duo bridges Nordic black metal atmospheres with Japanese folk elements. Their new single, "På Markene" ("The Fields Are Calling"), gives you a pretty quick idea of just how strange that combination can sound. At under three minutes, "På Markene" doesn't give itself much room for the usual slow build. I was expecting a drawn‑out intro, but the track gets straight into a wave of icy tremolo picking, dark mid‑tempo blast beats, and raspy vocals. What makes it distinct is the subtle placement of traditional Japanese instrumentation, like the koto, woven directly into the harsh guitar textures rather than being layered on top as a gimmicky distraction.

Leur nouveau single, « På Markene » (« Les champs appellent »), donne une idée assez rapide de ce que cette combinaison peut donner d'étrange. Avec moins de trois minutes, « På Markene » ne se laisse pas beaucoup de place pour une construction lente. Je m'attendais à une introduction longue, mais le morceau se lance directement dans une vague de tremolo picking glacé, de blast beats mid‑tempo sombres et de voix rauques. Ce qui le rend distinctif, c'est la subtile présence d'instruments traditionnels japonais, comme le koto, tissés directement dans les textures de guitare abrasive plutôt que superposés comme une distraction gimmick.

It's brief, cold and, at times, pretty uncomfortable. Somehow, that works. Two minutes and fifty seconds barely feels like enough time for a project focused on world‑building to fully unfold, but it leaves a sharp, lingering impression regardless. It's only two minutes and fifty seconds, so there's no excuse not to give it a shot. The combination of koto and Norwegian black metal is weird enough to be worth hearing.
C'est bref, froid et, par moments, assez inconfortable. Et pourtant, cela fonctionne. Deux minutes cinquante semblent à peine suffisantes pour qu'un projet axé sur la construction d'univers se déploie complètement, mais cela laisse une impression nette et persistante. Ce n'est que deux minutes cinquante, donc il n'y a aucune excuse pour ne pas essayer. La combinaison du koto et du black metal norvégien est suffisamment étrange pour valoir le coup d'être entendue.
