PERTH ALTERNATIVE METAL UNIT DELIVERS A HEAVY, ATMOSPHERIC SINGLE WITH GENUINE MUSCLE
Whenever a new alternative metal band drops names like Tool or Karnivool in their promo sheet, I automatically brace myself for a lot of overly complex, clinical riffs that forget to carry any actual emotion. But following their debut single "Nothing Is Wrong" from back in June, Australian outfit Winter On Venus prove with "Words I Never Meant" that they avoid that trap completely.
À chaque fois qu'un nouveau groupe de metal alternatif cite des noms comme Tool ou Karnivool dans son dossier de presse, je me prépare automatiquement à une avalanche de riffs trop complexes et cliniques qui oublient de porter une quelconque émotion. Mais après leur premier single « Nothing Is Wrong » sorti en juin, le groupe australien Winter On Venus prouve avec « Words I Never Meant » qu'ils évitent complètement ce piège.
Instead of hiding behind technical flexing, the Perth band lets the tension build up gradually. What grabbed my attention right away is the low‑end weight in the guitars: it has that heavy, slightly unhinged Deftones edge, but the rhythm section keeps shifting underneath in a way that feels surprisingly fluid. About halfway through the track, when the heavy guitars fully collide with the melodic vocals, the whole thing turns suffocating in the best way possible. It tackles self‑loathing and toxic emotional dependency, but it doesn't sound like four musicians showing off their timing; it sounds like a band locking into a tense groove and dragging you right down into it with them.
Au lieu de se cacher derrière des démonstrations techniques, le groupe de Perth laisse la tension monter progressivement. Ce qui a immédiatement attiré mon attention, c'est le poids des graves dans les guitares : il a ce côté lourd et légèrement déjanté à la Deftones, mais la section rythmique se déplace constamment en dessous d'une manière étonnamment fluide. Vers la moitié du morceau, quand les guitares lourdes entrent en collision avec les voix mélodiques, l'ensemble devient suffocant dans le meilleur sens du terme. Cela aborde le mépris de soi et la dépendance émotionnelle toxique, mais cela ne sonne pas comme quatre musiciens qui montrent leur technique ; cela sonne comme un groupe qui s'installe dans un groove tendu et vous entraîne avec lui.
The first thing that stayed with me wasn't even the main riff itself, but that uneasy, heavy feeling the song leaves hanging in the air after the final note cuts out. I put this on expecting a standard progressive rock single, but ended up looping it a few times just to catch how all those subtle layers lock together. If you're into heavy alternative rock with genuine muscle, give this one a spin ahead of its August 7th release.
La première chose qui m'est restée n'était même pas le riff principal, mais ce sentiment lourd et inconfortable que la chanson laisse flotter dans l'air après que la dernière note s'est éteinte. Je m'attendais à un single de rock progressif standard, mais j'ai fini par le mettre en boucle plusieurs fois pour saisir comment toutes ces couches subtiles s'assemblent.
