Review: Barbarian Prophecies - "Echoes"
SPANISH DEATH METAL VETERANS RETURN WITH AN ORGANIC, SURPRISINGLY SHARP EIGHTH OFFERING
Spanish death metal veterans Barbarian Prophecies will be back with their new eight‑track offering Echoes, set to drop on September 12th via Base Record Production and recorded at Kollapse Studio by Iván Ferro. Twenty‑five years into the game, bands usually fall into one of two traps: playing the exact same song for two decades or trying to embrace five different subgenres at once to stay relevant. Hearing that Barbarian Prophecies were blending classic Swedish death metal with progressive touches and acoustic folk passages made me brace for a scattered, directionless album trying to please everyone. But what actually hits on Echoes, and specifically on the lead single "Prometheus", is that the band kept their hands off the studio polish. Instead of relying on over‑compressed, robotic modern death metal triggers, the performance feels raw, human, and genuinely aggressive.

Vingt‑cinq ans de carrière, les groupes tombent généralement dans l'un des deux pièges : jouer exactement la même chanson pendant vingt ans ou essayer d'adopter cinq sous‑genres différents à la fois pour rester pertinents. Apprendre que Barbarian Prophecies mélangeait le death metal suédois classique avec des touches progressives et des passages folk acoustiques m'a fait craindre un album décousu et sans direction essayant de plaire à tout le monde. Mais ce qui frappe vraiment sur Echoes, et en particulier sur le single « Prometheus », c'est que le groupe est resté loin du polissage studio. Au lieu de s'appuyer sur des triggers de death metal moderne surcompressés et robotiques, la performance sonne brute, humaine et véritablement agressive.
Alicia's vocal delivery brings a venomous, throat‑shredding rasp that cuts right through the twin‑guitar assault of Arnt and Óscar. The transition into lighter, folk‑infused territory on "Cando penso que te fuches" with guest vocalist Lorena do Val could have easily derailed the album's momentum, but it lands with a haunting, dark weight rather than feeling like a cheap gimmick. It's an organic, surprisingly sharp record from a veteran crew that prefers raw grit over modern production tricks.
La voix d'Alicia apporte un rasp venimeux et déchirant qui traverse l'assaut à deux guitares d'Arnt et Óscar. La transition vers un territoire plus léger, infusé de folk, sur « Cando penso que te fuches » avec la chanteuse invitée Lorena do Val aurait facilement pu faire dérailler l'élan de l'album, mais elle s'impose avec un poids sombre et obsédant plutôt qu'un gimmick bon marché. C'est un album organique, étonnamment tranchant, d'un groupe de vétérans qui préfère le grain brut aux astuces de production modernes.
