Review: Eternal - "Conspiracy of Warheads"
ATHENS THRASHERS DELIVER A RAW, BLUNT‑FORCE TEN‑TRACK ASSAULT VIA FLOGA RECORDS
Athens thrasher outfit Eternal are dropping their new ten‑track album Conspiracy of Warheads at the end of September through Floga Records. Claiming inspiration from both Voivod and Anthrax sounds good on paper, but in practice, it usually means a band couldn't decide on an identity and settled for a chaotic mess of thrash tropes. I hit play on "Man Down (In The Front Row)" fully expecting a noisy, derivative headache disguised as high‑energy metal. What caught me off guard with "Man Down" is that Eternal don't try to sound like a pristine studio creation. The track kicks off with a jagged, high‑speed riff that leans heavily into the raw, aggressive thrash style of early Suicidal Angels, but it's the rhythm section that gives it teeth. Alex Archaniotis's drum work has a frantic, unedited feel, and Nick Pogas barks his vocals with enough throat‑shredding rasp to make the whole thing sound like it was tracked live in a basement after three beers too many. The lead guitar work on the solos keeps a rough, razor‑sharp edge instead of hiding behind artificial production tricks. It doesn't break any new ground, but it hits with enough blunt‑force energy to make you forget the clichés.

Se réclamer à la fois de Voivod et d'Anthrax sonne bien sur le papier, mais en pratique, cela signifie généralement qu'un groupe n'a pas réussi à choisir une identité et s'est contenté d'un mélange chaotique de tropes thrash. J'ai lancé « Man Down (In The Front Row) » en m'attendant à une migraine bruyante et dérivative déguisée en metal énergique. Ce qui m'a surpris avec « Man Down », c'est qu'Eternal n'essaie pas de sonner comme une création studio impeccable. Le morceau démarre avec un riff saccadé et rapide qui s'inspire du style thrash brut et agressif des premiers Suicidal Angels, mais c'est la section rythmique qui lui donne des dents. Le jeu de batterie d'Alex Archaniotis a un côté frénétique et non retouché, et Nick Pogas crache ses paroles avec assez de raucité pour donner l'impression que tout a été enregistré en live dans une cave après trois bières de trop. Le travail de guitare lead sur les solos garde un bord tranchant et rugueux au lieu de se cacher derrière des astuces de production artificielles. Cela ne casse pas de nouveaux codes, mais ça frappe avec assez d'énergie brute pour vous faire oublier les clichés.
