Review: Fatum Aeternum - "As Above So Below"
ISRAELI GOTHIC/DOOM OUTFIT DELIVERS A DARK, HEAVY TRACK WITH BOOTS FIRMLY ON THE GROUND
Israeli gothic/doom outfit Fatum Aeternum have returned with their new self‑released single "As Above So Below," marking their first music in three years with a revamped six‑piece lineup. Whenever a gothic metal outfit builds their entire PR pitch around classical strings and heavy doom influences, my bullshit detector goes off. Too often, bringing in a violin and cello is just a convenient distraction to cover up weak, repetitive riffing with generic melancholy. I hit play on "As Above So Below" bracing for an exhausting, over‑produced experiment trying way too hard to sound intellectual. What actually lands on "As Above So Below" is a far more stripped‑down and heavier track than the promo text lets on. Instead of relying on tacky symphonic tricks, the electric violin and cello lock into a low, jagged groove right alongside the guitar riffs. The contrast between Steve's deep baritone and Evelyn's whispered vocal passages gives the song a genuine, creeping tension that doesn't feel manufactured for dramatic effect.

Trop souvent, faire venir un violon et un violoncelle n'est qu'une distraction commode pour masquer un riffing faible et répétitif avec une mélancolie générique. J'ai lancé « As Above So Below » en me préparant à une expérience épuisante et surproduite essayant désespérément de paraître intellectuelle. Ce qui frappe réellement sur « As Above So Below », c'est un morceau bien plus dépouillé et lourd que ne le laisse entendre le texte promo. Au lieu de s'appuyer sur des astuces symphoniques de mauvais goût, le violon et le violoncelle électriques s'accordent dans un groove grave et acéré aux côtés des riffs de guitare. Le contraste entre le baryton profond de Steve et les passages vocaux chuchotés d'Evelyn donne à la chanson une tension rampante et sincère qui ne semble pas fabriquée pour l'effet dramatique.

The track keeps a steady, oppressive weight without getting bogged down in endless gothic cliches. The string arrangements add a cold, scraping edge rather than orchestral fluff, letting the rhythm section carry the actual punch. I went in expecting cheap theatrical doom. I got a dark, heavy track that keeps its boots firmly on the ground.
Le morceau maintient un poids régulier et oppressant sans s'enliser dans des clichés gothiques sans fin. Les arrangements à cordes ajoutent un bord froid et grinçant plutôt que du remplissage orchestral, laissant la section rythmique porter le vrai punch. Je m'attendais à du doom théâtral bon marché. J'ai eu un morceau sombre et lourd qui garde les pieds fermement sur terre.
