Upcoming Release: Mother Morgana - "Relic"
GRAZ STONER/PSYCH OUTFIT BUILDS REAL DYNAMIC TENSION WITHOUT STUDIO SAFETY NETS
Let's be honest: when a stoner/psych band promises a dark concept album about war trauma and Kantian philosophy, you usually brace yourself for a wall of pretentious atmospheric noise. Mother Morgana don't fall into that trap with "Relic." Instead of getting bogged down in heavy‑handed storytelling, the Graz outfit lets a raw, swinging triplet groove do the heavy lifting. The fuzz on Fabian Gössler's guitar is thick and low‑slung, but what actually kept me listening is the midsection. Out of nowhere, the heavy riffing drops out for a surprisingly sad, jazzy breakdown with airy slide guitar layered over the top. It shouldn't quite work next to the stoner weight of the intro, yet it gives the track a strange, solitary breathing room before the main riff slams back in.
Soyons honnêtes : quand un groupe de stoner/psych promet un album concept sombre sur le traumatisme de guerre et la philosophie kantienne, on se prépare généralement à un mur de bruit atmosphérique prétentieux. Mother Morgana ne tombent pas dans ce piège avec « Relic ». Au lieu de s'enliser dans une narration lourde, le groupe de Graz laisse un groove brut et balancé en triolets faire le gros du travail. Le fuzz de la guitare de Fabian Gössler est épais et grave, mais ce qui m'a vraiment retenu, c'est la section médiane. Sorti de nulle part, le riffing lourd s'arrête pour un breakdown jazzy étonnamment triste avec une slide guitar aérienne par‑dessus. Cela ne devrait pas vraiment fonctionner à côté du poids stoner de l'intro, et pourtant cela donne au morceau un étrange espace de respiration solitaire avant que le riff principal ne revienne en force.
"Relic"
Recording live was definitely the right move here. The bass stays fat and round without smothering Stefan Höfler's drum hits, and Katharina Franz's vocals don't get buried under digital polishing. It's not a mind‑bending revolution for the genre, but as a teaser for Reflections of a Sunken Mind (out November 27 via Argonauta), it shows a band that knows how to build real dynamic tension without relying on studio safety nets.
L'enregistrement en live était définitivement le bon choix ici. La basse reste grasse et ronde sans étouffer les frappes de batterie de Stefan Höfler, et la voix de Katharina Franz n'est pas enterrée sous un polissage numérique. Ce n'est pas une révolution qui bouleverse le genre, mais en tant que teaser pour Reflections of a Sunken Mind (sortie le 27 novembre via Argonauta), cela montre un groupe qui sait construire une vraie tension dynamique sans s'appuyer sur des filets de sécurité studio.
