BONN‑BASED ATMOSPHERIC BLACK METAL DUO UNLEASH A BITTER, UNCOMPROMISING SECOND FULL‑LENGTH

Bonn‑based atmospheric black metal duo Urisk are set to release their second full‑length album CALL on October 2nd through Vendetta Records, accompanied by an extensive autumn tour across Germany and Scotland. Academic concepts in black metal usually make me reach for the skip button. Between the Gaelic poetry, the ecological grief, and the deliberate linguistic double meanings, CALL presents the kind of intellectual framework that often hides a complete lack of riffing power. I was fully braced for forty minutes of pretentious ambient drone and polite post‑black meandering.

Les concepts académiques dans le black metal me font généralement chercher le bouton suivant. Entre la poésie gaélique, le deuil écologique et les doubles sens linguistiques délibérés, CALL présente le genre de cadre intellectuel qui cache souvent un manque total de puissance riffique. Je m'attendais pleinement à quarante minutes de drone ambiant prétentieux et d'errance post‑black polie.

What actually hits on CALL is that Urisk don't let their thematic depth dilute the raw hostility of their execution. Track two, "Uprooting," immediately drops any pretension of background wallpaper music, unleashing dense, layered guitar riffs and an unhinged, harsh vocal delivery that feels genuinely suffocating. The production strikes a clean balance: moving away from paper‑thin DIY bedroom acoustics thanks to drum tracking at Liquid Aether Studios, yet retaining enough grit and mud in the low end to keep the atmosphere heavy and bleak. Tracks like "Night Call" merge long, progressive structures with a frantic, folk‑rooted darkness without devolving into cheap gimmicks. It's an uncompromising, bitter slab of atmospheric black metal that earns its weight through sheer tension rather than intellectual posturing.

Ce qui frappe vraiment dans CALL, c'est qu'Urisk ne laisse pas sa profondeur thématique diluer l'hostilité brute de son exécution. Le deuxième morceau, « Uprooting », abandonne immédiatement toute prétention de musique d'ambiance, déchaînant des riffs de guitare denses et superposés et une voix agressive et déchaînée qui semble véritablement suffocante. La production trouve un équilibre net : s'éloignant des acoustiques de chambre DIY trop fines grâce à l'enregistrement de la batterie aux Liquid Aether Studios, tout en conservant assez de grain et de boue dans les graves pour garder une atmosphère lourde et lugubre. Des morceaux comme « Night Call » fusionnent de longues structures progressives avec une obscurité frénétique aux racines folkloriques sans tomber dans des gimmicks bon marché. C'est une plaque de black metal atmosphérique sans compromis et amer qui gagne son poids par la tension pure plutôt que par la posture intellectuelle.
