Flashback Review: Beyond The Pale - "Monument In Time" (EP / Limited Cassette)
A 100‑TAPE TESTAMENT TO PURE RESILIENCE AND CLASSIC THRASHING DEATH METAL
There's usually reason to be skeptical when an underground EP gets reissued a year or two later with a couple of bonus tracks thrown on top. But Utrecht's Beyond The Pale aren't milking a quick cash grab here. Originally self‑released on April 27th, 2024, Monument In Time got a proper physical revival this past January through UK label Black Metal Archives, specifically as a hand‑numbered cassette run capped at just 100 copies. It remains a record forged under the worst possible circumstances, coming together after founding guitarist Jeroen van Donselaar tragically collapsed on stage in 2022.

Mais Beyond The Pale, d'Utrecht, ne se livre pas ici à un coup de cash rapide. Initialement auto‑produit le 27 avril 2024, Monument In Time a bénéficié d'une véritable résurrection physique en janvier dernier via le label britannique Black Metal Archives, sous la forme d'une cassette numérotée à la main, limitée à seulement 100 exemplaires. Cela reste un disque forgé dans les pires circonstances possibles, assemblé après l'effondrement tragique sur scène du guitariste fondateur Jeroen van Donselaar en 2022.
Beyond The Pale
Instead of turning the EP into a polished, overly sentimental memorial, the Dutch quintet delivered a savage, razor‑sharp beating. The style sits squarely at the crossroads of classic European death/thrash and early‑2000s melodic aggression, calling back to the glory days of Dew Scented, Izegrim, or Slaughter of the Soul‑era Scandinavian riffing. Opener "Liberation For The Damned" doesn't mess around: it opens with interlocking twin‑guitar precision, a thick, roaming bassline from Frank van Boven, and Janneke de Rooy's vocals spitting absolute fire. Her high‑register screams lean almost into black metal territory, giving tracks like "The Age Of The Pariah" an unhinged, dangerous edge. The band isn't afraid to slow down the tempo either: "Storm en Drift" brings a welcome change of pace with lyrics sung in their native Dutch, anchored by deep, guttural growls.
Au lieu de transformer l'EP en un mémorial poli et trop sentimental, le quintette néerlandais a livré une raclée sauvage et tranchante comme un rasoir. Le style se situe exactement au carrefour du death/thrash européen classique et de l'agression mélodique du début des années 2000, renvoyant aux jours de gloire de Dew Scented, Izegrim, ou du riffing scandinave de l'ère Slaughter of the Soul. Le morceau d'ouverture « Liberation For The Damned » ne plaisante pas : il s'ouvre sur une précision à deux guitares imbriquées, une ligne de basse épaisse et vagabonde de Frank van Boven, et la voix de Janneke de Rooy crachant un feu absolu. Ses cris dans le registre aigu frôlent presque le territoire du black metal, donnant à des morceaux comme « The Age Of The Pariah » un bord déjanté et dangereux. Le groupe n'a pas peur de ralentir le tempo non plus : « Storm en Drift » apporte un changement de rythme bienvenu avec des paroles chantées dans leur néerlandais natal, ancré par des grognements profonds et gutturaux.
Tony Lindgren's mastering at Fascination Street Studios gives the instruments a punchy, physical weight without scrubbing away the dirt; a crisp production job that translates surprisingly well onto tape. The bass drum clicks are punchy, the dual lead guitars cut through clean, and the rhythm section feels locked in. As for the bonus material, the "Frost Rimix" of "Facts And Figures" brings a strange, industrial‑tinged bionic twist to the track, but the real heart of this reissue remains the original sessions featuring Jeroen's final riffs. It's not a flawless release, a couple of the five‑minute arrangements like "Walk The Plank" drag just a bit longer than necessary, but as a 100‑tape testament to pure resilience and classic thrashing death metal, it hits where it counts.
Le mastering de Tony Lindgren aux Fascination Street Studios donne aux instruments un poids percutant et physique sans effacer la crasse ; un travail de production net qui passe étonnamment bien sur bande. Les clics de grosse caisse sont percutants, les deux guitares lead tranchent proprement, et la section rythmique semble verrouillée. Quant au matériel bonus, le « Frost Rimix » de « Facts And Figures » apporte une étrange torsion bionique teintée d'industriel au morceau, mais le vrai cœur de cette réédition reste les sessions originales avec les derniers riffs de Jeroen. Ce n'est pas une sortie sans défaut : quelques‑uns des arrangements de cinq minutes comme « Walk The Plank » traînent un peu plus longtemps que nécessaire, mais en tant que testament de 100 cassettes à la résilience pure et au death metal thrashé classique, il frappe là où ça compte.
