Single & Album Spotlight: DIRTY SHIRT - "A Brighter Day" (feat. Ian Anderson)
ROMANIAN FOLKCORE OUTFIT ANNOUNCES DOUBLE ALBUM AND ENLISTS JETHRO TULL'S IAN ANDERSON ON FLUTE
Romanian genre‑blending outfit Dirty Shirt have announced a double‑album project titled Balkansylvania, with the first volume, Roots, slated for digital release in January 2027. Ahead of the record, the band has shared a new single, "A Brighter Day," featuring a guest appearance by Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson on flute. Over three decades, Dirty Shirt have built a distinctive sound, mixing modern heavy metal with traditional Eastern European folk instruments and groove‑driven rhythms. "A Brighter Day" combines driving riffs and catchy melodies with the warmth of a children's choir, while the lyrics step away from lighthearted themes to address personal accountability and choices in an era of misinformation.

The real highlight, of course, is Ian Anderson's contribution. According to composer and keyboardist Mihai Tivadar, Anderson was sent five demos and personally selected "A Brighter Day." Given complete creative freedom, Anderson recorded his parts the following day, delivering flute themes and solos that fit naturally into both the song's acoustic passages and its heavy, aggressive closing section. The upcoming album, Balkansylvania Vol. 1: Roots, explores the foundational musical influences behind the band's sound. Physical editions of both volumes are planned for 2028. The artwork was created by Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu, known for his work with Ghost, Opeth, and At The Gates.
Dirty Shirt will continue promoting the project with European dates in late 2026 and 2027, including stops in Romania, Slovakia, France (Snow Fest in March 2027), the UK, Germany, and Poland. Ian Anderson's flute gives "A Brighter Day" an extra dimension, adding a distinctive touch to Dirty Shirt's already unusual mix of folk and metal.
