Review: Halcyon Drift - "I Made Do" (Debut Single)
OTTAWA FIVE‑PIECE DELIVERS A STATEMENT OF PURE RESILIENCE WITH A WELL‑EXECUTED DJENT‑METALCORE DEBUT
When a fresh band drops a debut single claiming they've already got three full‑length albums locked away in a vault, it's easy to roll your eyes and expect a rush job. But Ottawa's Halcyon Drift aren't green kids throwing together their first riffs in a garage. Built on a tragic history, born from the ashes of a teenage band disrupted by the passing of their original drummer Diego Bussières in 2020, guitarist Matt Pilon and vocalist Matt Zephyr spent years refining this project before ever stepping into the light. Released on October 1st, 2026, "I Made Do" is the first public step for the Ontario five‑piece, and it's a statement of pure resilience.
"I Made Do" (Official Lyric Video)
Musically, the track plants its boots firmly in modern djent‑metalcore territory: heavy, syncopated low‑end chugs colliding with aggressive hardcore momentum and subtle hip‑hop‑influenced rhythmic phrasing. What keeps it from sounding like every other Periphery or Architects clone flooding the internet is the dual‑vocal dynamic. Zephyr's harsh growls carry genuine, unvarnished grit, while clean vocalist Guillaume Parisien brings an unconventional, airy timbre that gives the soaring chorus a surprisingly distinct flavor rather than feeling like a cookie‑cutter radio hook. From a production standpoint, the track carries an impressive DIY badge. Originally tracked in part as a graduation project at TARA (The Audio Recording Academy) before being fully engineered, mixed, mastered, and designed in‑house by Zephyr himself, the mix avoids the worst pitfalls of home‑studio djent. The drum tones hit punchy and natural thanks to new arrival Mikey Trottier behind the kit, and the low‑string guitar bounces retain their clarity without suffocating under digital fizz.
Lyrically, "I Made Do" skips abstract posturing for a straightforward message about clawing your way through grief and life's heavier hits. It's a loud, emotional, and well‑executed debut that balances heavy pit‑fuel with a clear cinematic trajectory. If this is just the opening chapter of what they've been sitting on for the past two years, Ottawa might have a serious heavy contender on its hands.
