Album Preview / Spotlight: i Helvete - "Halla"
FINNISH BLACK/DEATH OUTFIT BLENDS ICY MELODIES WITH SAXOPHONE, ACCORDION AND VIBRAPHONE
Finnish black/death metal outfit i Helvete are gearing up to release their third full‑length album, Halla, on November 6th. The material actually dates back to 2024, but after a few lineup changes caused some delays, the band is finally ready to drop this six‑track self‑release. When a black metal band lists saxophone, accordion, French horn, and vibraphone in their session credits, it's fair to brace yourself for either a messy folk‑metal experiment or an over‑ambitious novelty act. But i Helvete aren't doing this for cheap tricks. On their second single "Hiljaisuuteen," that saxophone integration is surprisingly subtle, adding a cold, melancholic layer to the music rather than taking over the show.

Le matériel date en fait de 2024, mais après quelques changements de line‑up ayant causé des retards, le groupe est enfin prêt à sortir cet auto‑produit de six titres. Quand un groupe de black metal liste saxophone, accordéon, cor français et vibraphone dans ses crédits de session, il est légitime de se préparer soit à une expérience folk‑metal brouillonne, soit à un acte de nouveauté trop ambitieux. Mais i Helvete ne fait pas ça pour des astuces bon marché. Sur leur deuxième single « Hiljaisuuteen », l'intégration du saxophone est étonnamment subtile, ajoutant une couche froide et mélancolique à la musique plutôt que de prendre toute la place.

At its core, Halla stays firmly rooted in icy, melodic Finnish black metal, but the tracks are given plenty of room to breathe. Bringing in outside session players for these extra touches gives the atmospheric sections a colder, more cinematic edge; it's definitely in line with bands like Grima or Wormwood, but the weird instrument choices keep it from feeling like a copy‑paste job. The rollout is already moving fast. First single "Nälkätalvi" landed back in August (even picking up a Track of the Week feature in Metal Hammer), and a final preview single is scheduled for October 15th before the full record arrives in November. Since i Helvete operate strictly as a studio project for now, it feels like they've put most of their energy into the craft and arrangements. If you like atmospheric black metal that stays heavy but isn't afraid to try a few strange turns, it's definitely worth checking out when November rolls around.
Dans son cœur, Halla reste fermement ancré dans le black metal finlandais glacé et mélodique, mais les morceaux ont beaucoup d'espace pour respirer. Faire appel à des musiciens de session extérieurs pour ces touches supplémentaires donne aux sections atmosphériques un bord plus froid et plus cinématographique ; c'est clairement dans la lignée de groupes comme Grima ou Wormwood, mais les choix d'instruments étranges l'empêchent de ressembler à un copier‑coller. Le déploiement avance déjà vite. Le premier single « Nälkätalvi » est sorti en août (décrochant même une feature Track of the Week dans Metal Hammer), et un dernier single d'aperçu est prévu pour le 15 octobre avant l'arrivée de l'album complet en novembre. Comme i Helvete opère strictement comme un projet studio pour l'instant, on sent qu'ils ont mis la plupart de leur énergie dans l'artisanat et les arrangements. Si vous aimez le black metal atmosphérique qui reste lourd mais n'a pas peur d'essayer quelques virages étranges, cela vaut clairement le coup d'œil quand novembre arrivera.
