Alright, metalheads, gather 'round! Opium Death, those sonic crushers from Chicago, dropped their debut full-length album, “Genocidal Nemesis”, back in April. Yeah, it’s been out for a few months now, but if you haven't cranked it up yet, you’re missing out. These guys have been tearing it up since 2012, and despite a few lineup changes, their mission to modernize that raw '80s thrash sound is as strong as ever. Originally formed as Cazador, they've undergone quite the metamorphosis.
Their hard-hitting single, “The Condemned”, dives deep into some seriously dark waters. Guitarist Irvin Gonzalez spills the beans:
“When I was writing this song, the news was flooded with tragic stories of kids driven to suicide by relentless bullying. It pissed me off, so I wrote this track for those victims, reflecting their thoughts and feelings from the other side".
Musically, it’s a straightforward metal track with a groove that hooks you in, hoping to draw attention to the lyrics and the grim reality of bullying. While Irvin isn’t advocating for violence, he wants listeners to get angry enough to make a change.
Opium Death plans to keep showcasing their new album at local and regional venues, delivering face-melting performances wrapped in brutal, passionate sonic blasts. If you dig Gojira, Cannibal Corpse, or Cattle Decapitation, this one’s for you.
“Genocidal Nemesis” is available now. Grab it at Opium Death Bandcamp.
