CANADIAN TECH/DEATH UNIT REWORKS A DECADE‑OLD SONG AS A HOMAGE AND FRESH START
Out of Brockville, Ontario, Altersoul is the new chapter born from the ashes of Ominous Eclipse. Following the loss of founding bass player Ryan Clements, longtime collaborators James Close and Graham Murphy chose to retire the old name and launch this project as both a homage and a fresh start. For their debut single, "Abandoned", they went back to where it all began, re‑recording a track originally written over a decade ago on a budget acoustic guitar. I wasn't expecting the acoustic opening to hit as hard as it did, especially knowing what sits behind the song. Layered with real strings recorded by the band members themselves, that quiet intro sets a surprisingly heavy mood before the song explodes into a technical, dual‑vocal death metal track. Instead of sounding like cheap keyboard presets, the orchestrations feel genuinely integrated into the guitar work, giving the melodic riffs a much darker bottom end.

Suite à la perte du bassiste fondateur Ryan Clements, les collaborateurs de longue date James Close et Graham Murphy ont choisi de retirer l'ancien nom et de lancer ce projet à la fois comme un hommage et un nouveau départ. Pour leur premier single, « Abandoned », ils sont revenus à leurs origines, réenregistrant un morceau écrit il y a plus de dix ans sur une guitare acoustique bas de gamme. Je ne m'attendais pas à ce que l'ouverture acoustique frappe aussi fort, surtout en sachant ce qui se cache derrière la chanson. Superposée à de véritables cordes enregistrées par les membres du groupe eux‑mêmes, cette intro silencieuse installe une ambiance étonnamment lourde avant que la chanson n'explose en un morceau de death metal technique à deux voix. Au lieu de sonner comme des presets de clavier bon marché, les orchestrations semblent véritablement intégrées au travail de guitare, donnant aux riffs mélodiques une grave beaucoup plus sombre.

Reworking a ten‑year‑old song to introduce a new band could easily have felt like looking backwards. Here, it doesn't. The modern self‑produced mix gives the heavy sections proper punch while allowing the acoustic break in the middle to breathe naturally. Knowing where "Abandoned" came from gives the track an extra weight. But even without that story behind it, the song stands on its own.
Retravailler une chanson de dix ans pour présenter un nouveau groupe aurait facilement pu sembler tourné vers le passé. Ici, ce n'est pas le cas. Le mix moderne auto‑produit donne aux sections lourdes un punch approprié tout en permettant à la pause acoustique au milieu de respirer naturellement. Savoir d'où vient « Abandoned » donne au morceau un poids supplémentaire. Mais même sans cette histoire derrière, la chanson tient debout.
